Junk by M83 Album Info

Junk is the seventh studio album by Los Angeles based French electronic music band M83 (led by Anthony Gonzalez). The album was released on 8 April 2016 on Naïve Records (France) and Mute Records (US). In a press release, Gonzalez explained the meaning of the new album's title, Junk: "Anything we create today is going to end up being space junk at one point anyway, and I find it really fascinating and scary at the same time - beautiful too in a way. I have this image of pieces of humanity floating in space, lost forever. It also means that nowadays everything goes so fast and everybody is kind of throwing away art in a certain manner. People will listen to an album for instance and just pick a track they like to put on a playlist. They're not going to take the time to listen to an album anymore because they have to jump on the next thing." Gonzalez explained that his new album was inspired by 1970s and 1980s American TV shows such as Punky Brewster and Who's the Boss?: "I feel like TV shows are starting to sound and look the same. There's no more passion anymore. So this album is a tribute to those old-fashioned shows." He also spoke about the new album with excitement: "It’s a very strong album with a lot of eclecticism. It’s very epic. There’s a lot of different genres that are not supposed to live together but I tried to make them live together, which is quite challenging. It’s also quite different from the previous albums which is what I’m the most proud of." Fans can expect a different sound: “It’s more fun and fresh than my last album. But it’s good to take your listeners into a different maze, you know?” In a press release, Anthony Gonzalez further explained: "I want to show different sides of me on this album. I want to come back with something more intimate, yet somehow with…less me! All my albums have layers of eclecticism to them, but with this album I wanted to take that even further." Several guests will be featured on the album, most notably Beck and Norwegian singer-songwriter Susanne Sundfør. "Do It, Try It" was released as a first single on 1 March 2016.

Roc69 - Junk is a work of ART

M83's new album is like modern art if you only give it one shot you will never realize it's true beauty and miss out on something truly special. Like most people I was very excited to hear of M83's new release and I have to say at first I was a bit skeptical. The reason I prefer to consume music that is not mainstream is what makes an artist like Anthony Gonzalez elite he could have easily made Hurry We're Dreaming Part 2 and sold millions of units but he didn't. This album is awesome I wouldn't have it any other way and I hope he continues to compose great art now and in the future.

Jokerista - M83

Sounds like M83, but also does not. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the album, but after listening to it a few times I have come to the conclusion that I really like it! Good job M83!!! :)

allisonqi - LOVE THIS

Can't agree with all their fans hating this album. This is definitely something different but attracting and fantastic

Matt2851 - not what I expected

I don’t even know what to say. Reading negative comments threw me off but I trusted my gut and went for it. I bought it, and without a doubt fell in love with the nostalgic tones and the thrilling instrumental drops like in Solitude. If you’re a true M83 fan, and could appreciate some of the melancholy undertones, this is for you! Couldn’t have came out at a better time! <3 My favorites: Solitude, Walkway Blues, For the Kids (even though its somewhat sad, but beautiful) Do it, Try it…. who am I kidding, all are unique and offer a different feeling. I would recommend it!

Benjiehorn - Cynical Anthony does not a good record make

I've been a huge fan of M83 since Dawn, and HUWD was my favorite album of the entire year when it came out. This album feels completely uninspired and it feels as if he was completely uninterested in making a new album. It lacks cohesiveness, and feels muddled. I'm all for featuring guest artists but when you have more of them than songs that you sing on, it's not really an M83 record any more. Do It Try It, Go! And Solitude are by far the stand outs. Walkaway, Bibi, The Wizard and Moon Crystal are complete throw away filler tracks on an album that's already fairly lean. I miss the grandeur and epic sounds of M83 of the last and I certainly hope this isn't a sign of the direction he's headed.

Vir Latinus - Not Junk!

Every time an artist turns direction fans feel betrayed and get upset. This is a decent effort and give it a listen. There’s always something new to discover hidden within. I like it.

alicakes123 - Junk!

This album is amazing! M83 seamlessly blended different decades and genres of music and still kept his sound intact. Can listen to this album over and over.

acarter3 - Well... :/

This most certainly is not what I expected. I am disappointed right now by this album. I only enjoyed "Solitude" but the rest is questionable. I don't mean to be dissing on M83, but I want the old them back. This was terrible & I am quite disappointed.

StephC79 - Love it!

I've been listening to this album on repeat. I love the late 70's/early 80's influence. This album puts me in a great mood.

Kbskdkeddnlzbhwkdnwnxwl - Changed my mind

This album really grows on you. At release, I was disappointed. But now, I absolutely love it.

egkim904 - Blastin' off

Sounds like gold, must be worth a fortune.

SKUUSHY - brilliant

It is a departure from previous works. With that said, its a welcome change and not a complete stretch to think this album is a more introspective- a personal reflection of style and influence. Most of the songs run an appropriate length and although different in their approach still mangae to share a certain cohesive quality. Eventually, this album will be highly regarded.

Estilista - Another Masterpiece!

I don't care what anyone says! This album is a sheer pleasure to experience! I'm so happy it exists! I suggest listening as if no one were around. Put aside any preconceptions about M83's style, ignore your reflex to avoid anything "cheesy" and indulge in the smooth sounds. Grown ups only please. Your ears and mind will be rewarded!

Cass Ro - M83. does not disappoint

Artists evolve over time. They become better at their craft and have ever changing inspirations. Anthony Gonzalez is always true to himself and I found that this made for a smooth nostalgic dip into a past I've always secretly longed to enjoy. Isn't that what we love about M83?

scottendor - beautiful

i like that the title is junk, because to me it sort of goes with the ideas he anthony had with this album…..imagine a trunk of old video tapes or TV shows and records from the 70s and most people calling it useless junk, but for m83, it’s art and inspiration :) bravo, m83 <3 few albums i listen to have a trackless where i never wanna skip!

Scrambledgregs - FRESH

This album is something new. Love the vibe. Love the sounds. Love this album. Sounds like an artist stretching that is stretching their creativity. I don't understand the hate. It's a great example of a an artist being different without losing what makes them unique.

Aj_swag - M83 junk review

Not what I was expecting hoped more from m83

shasha bojee - 5 stars for Time Wind

Time Wind is awesome. Unfortunately the rest of the album is merely pretty good. Definitely not a bad album, in my opinion, but I could see how M83 fans might be disappointed.

Mazzack - Good Album

I have never been that into M83, I've listened to prior albums and they always felt trite. This album came up as a suggestion from album, and I listened. And man, I connected. This album is certainly different from prior ones, absolutely no dispute there. But, this album is something special I think. Slower in pace, this album definitely takes you somewhere else. Of the two French tracks the second is absolutely beautiful. Not sure what they are saying; but I'm assuming it's profound.

True Soul - LOVE it ! Some great songs here !

I”m by no means a big M83 fan. Prior to seeing them live 2 weeks ago, the only song I knew was Midnight City, and I don’t really care for that song very much. That being said, this album is very interesting and caught my ear. Best songs are “Do it, Try it”, “Walkway Blues”, “Bibi the Dog” “Laser Gun”, and “Road Blaster”. I love every single one of those songs, really great stuff. This band is awesome live too. Again, that’s coming from someone who was never into them before. Good job M83, way to be original .

Sorrybutnotsorry. - WAIT!

If you’re about to buy this album because you like M83…don’t do it. You will hate this album or you will pretend to like it and try to explain how this is a new creative direction that will be appreciated for years to come…but truthfully, it’s hard to listen to. Really hard. It’s junk.

Painful... - Album title is perfect...

Because this is a poor outing for M83. The retro 70s mix with EDM fails to capture the spirit and the feel of what made previous M83 albums great. If you're new to this group and enjoy this album, you probably won't like the previous installments. Consequently, long time fans (like myself) may have a difficult time listening to it more than once.

Catarino - Whats wrong with innovation…thats M83

From the beginning M83 has had a singular unique strand of sound that is woven into each song or album. Surrounding that strand is a conglomeration of sound that makes M83, M83. Anthony Gonzalez is truly a musician who appreciates all genres and generations of music. Although different from Hurry Up and past albums, Junk has a nice funky groove. 70’s lounge music feel at times. I appreciate the depth of the entire album, lighthearted one song then pensive the next…all in M83 style. The music should be appreciated for the music itself, not whether a person works for a newspaper or has a million M83 stickers. Like the first song: Do it, Try it ...

docksan - Totally different, but artists have to evolve.

When I first heard “Do It, Try It” I was dumbfounded. Where was the M83 that reminded me of my teen-angst years? I gave it another listen, and then another, and it slowly grew on me. I didn’t hear anymore of the songs until I saw M83 live on the day of the album’s release. So, my introduction to most of these songs were in a live, highly charged environment. Since then, I have had this album on repeat, and can’t get enough of it. A lot of these song’s transport me back to the 70’s & 80’s. Everybody wants a repeat of Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming? Why would AG do the same thing? He already did that style of music, and it was a double album! Look at the great artists in the past, they changed it up, they evolved. Was every album great? No, artists put out good & not so good work, and varying degrees in between. If you don’t like this album, fine, but don’t say that AG has lost it, he’s exploring. If I have one complaint about this album, it’s the fact that it seems disjointed. It doesn’t flow in one complete theme/style like previous albums. So as a whole, it’s not a good ‘album’ in my opinion. But when you listen to the songs and judge them singularly, I think it’s a great compilation. Maybe that’s just the new, digital, single-oriented world of music we live in now.

FERRARIII - For True Lovers

MASTERPIECE. M83 has always been unique and through out the years have always improved. This Album's Proof of their Improved Artistry. It captures a wide palette of emotion, feeling, and movement. Did an Amazing Job sticking to the Composition. (LOVE the Lo-Fi vintage sound in Wizard:} This is a cruising album for sure. Don't listen to the "haters", they don't know much of anything in this world. This is a Masterpiece.

ryrywell - awesome

have had it on repeat for the past four days. LOVE IT.

OrenentExpress - Lol

I actually kind of like this album

marathawson - OK effort

Love m83, but this just doesn’t do it for me. Maybe it will grow on me.

LAXtremest - Not as good as previous work

It's still a decent record but it is a far cry from the masterpiece of the last album. Personal favorite is the song with Beck.,

Michael Robert Dolgon - It’s not nearly as bad as half of you are whining about

Honestly, I’ve been an M83 fan since a lot longer than i’m sure most of the people on here have — since at least 2003-2004. “Dead Cities…” will always be a favorite of the albums of mine and while I agree that topping “Hurry Up We’re Dreaming” would have been difficult/impossible to do due to the expectations that most people were already putting into this release, surely anything that was to be the end result would have ended up with this similar negativity surrounding it. I don’t think it’s warranted. This is a fun, lighthearted album and if you give it a listen, on it’s own merits, it’s a decently enjoyable listen. Nothing stood out to me as much as the track “Go” does at least after 4 listens through. But I don’t think that it’s a “1 star” worthy album, and all the people who choose to rate an album with 1 star really should be saving that kind of rating for some actual trash music which there is plenty of on iTunes. This is not.

One hurt individual - A piece of Music

Just like art, This album doesn't stand on the crutches of success that the previous album brought Instead, the music accentuates new characteristics and forms strong pillars of musical ingenuity that is NEW I'm still pleasantly surprised that AG can create an album this different and still this well written. It transports me to a different place with each listen. You can Listen to it for FREE a couple times on YouTube for a good taste of what's going on in the land of M83 (that's what I did, and I've been strongly compelled to buy it)

361+82+62 - Horrible.

How do we go from such amazing and well thoughtout songs and albums to this? Strong and Wasted, Space Fertilizer, Open Your Eyelids to Die with The Sun, Kim and Jessie, Skin of the Night, Steve McQueen, just a few of the great and amazing songs M83 has created over the years. I don't know what Anthony called himself attempting to do on this new record but it is a slap in the face to true long time fans. The record really is "Junk." Very diasapointed. I hope it's a concept album at best and this won't be a permanent change in musical styles. If that is the case his career is as good as done.

luilopes - M83 Junk

Soooo disappointed! :(

Robnson - What!?

Please, Don't waste your time and money to produce such a rubbish track. Leave it for great artists!!

CUin2004 - Different but I'm into it

Definitely a different sound for beloved M83 but I'm thoroughly enjoying the four songs I picked up - Road Blaster, Laser Gun, Go! and Bibi the Dog. I've been listening to them here and there for several days and they continue to grow on me. They seem to have a real interesting combination of electric/80's, funky and futuristic that's different from anything I can put my finger on. I can understand how those who were expecting more of the traditional M83 sound may be a little confused by this partial departure but I've individually always had more use for M83's more upbeat melodies ... so these four jams are getting a lot of reps on my playlist.

Mozaicflo - Too bad

Wow, I’m all for bands growing and maturing, but I don’t get it when a band completely changes their style. Why not just become a different band and leave behind the legacy and style of the old band rather than taint it? I mean, that is pretty much what has happened; all the band members are gone, the music is a totally different style, but the band’s name is the same, making everyone - except disco, jazz, and funk lovers to tune in.

ccins11 - Phenomenal

I can't remember the last time I loved an album this much. The songwriting is phenomenally strong and the 80's production is joyous. It may not be for everyone but it's truly their loss. This album is phenomenal.

Conn0r333 - Love m83, but this is 👎

No

tcf098 - M83, please come home...

I’ve been listening to the album on repeat for the past couple of weeks, hoping that something would click. I’m afraid that I’m still not getting it. I don’t understand what Anthony was thinking with many of these songs. And I was hoping that “Do It, Try It” was just one quirky single, released to grab peoples’ attention, only to find that the album was more of the epic, airy M83 anthems that made us fans in the first place. Is this album complete garbage? Perhaps not. It’s just not the M83 we’ve all grown to love. There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with an artist branching out to explore other styles of music, however, when an artist like M83 has established a well-known and widely-loved sound with several previous albums, fans tend to salivate for more of the same. Especially after such an extended album hiatus. I don’t necessarily consider an artist changing their sound as "selling out”. In reality, it’s only "selling out" if your album actually sells – in the process of selling out. I’m reminded of the most recent Mumford & Sons album. Their fans wanted more banjo, and instead, they gave us their best Coldplay impression. As for M83’s Junk, there are a couple songs that harken back to what we all know and love. But as an album, the title couldn’t be more fitting. Maybe this was intentional? Maybe he wanted to get this off his chest before reemerging with his very own “Fragile”, like Trent Reznor did back in 1999. In the meantime, Mr. Gonzalez, I’ll be here, listening to HUWD as usual, deeply pining for your return.

Yoshimitsu-)(- - Junk

Just so happens to be junk

Lbledstone - If you can't handle m83 at their worst then you certainly don't deserve them at their best.

This album is the diamond the rough. Their theme was nostalgia, boy did they ever hit that. It's full on late 70's early 80's for sure. You'll here some say they don't like it. But what they really mean is its not midnight city.. This album is a good change of pace and full of kitsch. With elements reminiscent of Neon Indian and such this album is sure to please. But beware this is a style change and is their most experimental album to date and some may find it hard too listen to. Though after three or four listens it all clicks and you feel right at home. Lastly: if midnight city is all you know brace your self because there will never be a other midnight city.

marth - blown away

To be fair, I was never a die hard M83 fan so I’m not married to the “sound” of previous albums. And with that said, this is by far my favorite album. It’s definitely not for everyone. It’s not vague, it’s very specifically nostalgic. For anyone that romances or waxes poetic the highlights of the late 1970’s, this album takes you on an adventure in time in the best way possible. I’ve listened to on loop for the past week and I’m nowhere near done. I rarely write reviews, so the mere fact that I felt compelled to share my thoughts, says enough.

Rival47 - Adios M83

This is really really really bad. M83 has completely abandoned who they are and tried to go mainstream. Now it's just plain garbage...or junk, whatever they want to call it. Millennials will love it I'm sure.

Gorian Dray - Everything must change

Listening to older M83 albums makes you realize how totally influential they've been in addition to almost single handedly inventing a genre of music which marries diverse influences such as spoken word, soundtrack, rock, pop, ambient and electronic into one epic head trip. To me, this album represents the evolution of an artist who wanted to move beyond his comfort zone and copy cat bands into a new world of sound.

Tincastle - Terrible

What a massive disappointment. This is not the M83 I've grown to love over the past decade. This album is simply a collection of 70s and 80s sounding songs and cheesy sitcom soundtracks. Total garbage. The only reason this album has 4 stars right now is because it's counting reviews from over a month before it was even released in its entirety. How can reviews that gave it 5 stars be counted just because someone was "I'm so excited!" or " I can't wait!" because they have a new album coming out?

Montycoop6 - A journey

M83's newest album 'Junk' is quite an experience. Now of course this album has received mixed reviews and with good reason. I am not a fan of all the songs on the album, but that number is decreasing. Initially the song style is almost alienating as a listener. But after getting accustomed to the genre and direction of 'Junk' you might take a better liking to it. Much like Daft Punk's exploration in various genres, M83 is crafting songs that have a rich 70s/80s vibe to them. And if you look you will find some definite gems in this album. Definitely worth a 2nd or 3rd listen with an open mind to thoroughly enjoy 'Junk'. So as the first song says, "Do it, Try it" because you might be surprised.

wisedon - Which adjective to use...

Disappointed, lacking in depth, not-original, soul-less, etc. I could go on but I don’t have the energy. This album is a distinct departure from previous works (which I love), so yes this one is very much unlike the others in a non-liked way.

Roudoudoucoucouroucou01 - Surprised

I wasn't a fan..; until I listened this new album...;what a mess,a gorgeous rich junk mess...-:))

Ike Moon - I don’t even like M83 that much

I don’t like pop, nor do I like over-produced electronica. I feel like M83 sometimes loses me, and I can’t really tell why I’m listening to them. I know loads of people like Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, and there were some tracks I loved from that album and still listen to, the majority of it dragged on for me. Perhaps there’s something you all love about music that is very present in that album, something that I don’t notice. For me, "Junk" is an epic combo of rare sensations that I am constantly seeking. Whether you love it or hate it, you have to admit; this album is pretty unique. It’s like the 80’s reinvented, only this time as the soundtrack to a child’s dream about space. Some of the solos found on this album seem very hard to recreate, like the one at the end of Go!, which is one of my favorite tracks on this album. I know there has been a lot of criticism towards this album; it seems to be something that you’ll either love or hate. After listening to this album a bit more, it’s not really THAT awesome (though some tracks are), but I’d like to add that a lot my favorite parts the ones with wind instruments (i.e French horns, trumpets, etc.)

Cad84 - 😠

Love M83 but this new album is trash.
