The Getaway by Red Hot Chili Peppers Album Info

The Getaway is the eleventh studio album by American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, released through Warner Bros. on June 17, 2016. This is the band's first studio album since 2011's I'm with You. It was produced by Danger Mouse, who replaced Rick Rubin after twenty-five years and six albums as the band's producer, making it the first non-Rubin produced album since 1989's Mother's Milk, while its release makes the current lineup of the band only the second in the group's history to record more than one album together. The album was preceded by the first single "Dark Necessities" on May 5, 2016. "Dark Necessities" became the band's 25th top-ten single on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, a record they hold over U2 who currently have 23 top-ten singles. The Getaway made its debut at number one in ten different countries while reaching number two in the band's home country of the United States along with the United Kingdom and Canada. Since its release, the album received mostly favourable reviews from critics.

Yes this album I love it šŸ˜ā¤ļø yes sir I like this song the chili peppers are back I like this style and albums so much

Yomommaļ¼ˆā‰§āˆ‡ā‰¦ļ¼‰ - Truly Beautiful

I'm an Chi Ep fan and have been for a while and I'm very happy with this album. There seems to be mixed reviews and honestly there's but one song that is Meh on here and I've listened to this album a few times...(before I even bought it) and I have to say it's This Ticonderoga. It reminds me of the crunchy sound in Song 2 by Blur. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just appreciate a more smoother sound like in Wet Sand or I Could've Lied or even Around The World. My personal favorite is Sick Love. So many people claim they only listen to Red Hot Chili Peppers' old stuff but everything they've ever done just improves upon itself in my opinion.

RM2(SS) - Raw, Complex, Mature

My review: This is The Red Hot's darkest offering since One Hot Minute. There is a rawness here that the band had seemingly abandoned after BSSM. While this is nowhere near BSSM in pure energy, it's still an admirable effort. Tracks are alternately jarring, atonal and dissonant, giving way to ethereal harmonies. With good reason has this album been classified as "alternative." John Frusciante's departure from RHCP, again, will surely leave fans somewhat discontent, and rightly so. Josh was his handpicked replacement however, and his style is much more understated and subtle. Whereas John absolutely tortured the strings, lacing sustains with breathtaking riffs, Josh is comfortable with settling into the mix; the melody. Chad remains Chad. Steady, powerful and playful. Still one of the best drummers in the genre. Still trying to figure out how he does some of the stuff he does. Division and subdivision. A mathematician and soulfully adept foundation. You can tell that Flea has taken and mastered music theory, as his bass is just as funky as ever (let's not forget that RHCP was originally produced by George Clinton), but tempered with a musical maturity that is unmistakable. Anthony's voice is...well...Anthony's voice. In other words, he'll never be mistaken for anyone else. He does sound, however, as if he is much more comfortable with nuance. Still, he can rattle off a fluent, seamless line or two, a la, say, Tupaq. I know that's a bold statement, but...yes, I would have loved to hear a collaboration. The keyboards are brought more to the front in the mix than usual, and on this album, that's not a bad thing. Overall, I rate this album A-. The band has moved on; aged well.

Alecwolf - Baes

I love them so much, I'm a massive fan and will always give them my support. Much love from Tennessee. šŸ’™šŸ’™

Roadrescuer - Get with it!

I go all the way back to the '70's, when, as a young teen, I was listening to stuff from the '60s by the likes of Hendrix, The Doors, Deep Purple & ZZ Top, & I hated when bands from those eras changed their sound 2 fit the times (seriously, ZZ TOP, 'Sharp Dressed Man?!). By the Time the '80s-'90s rolled around, & RHCP emerged, I was ready that hard bite of rock that I'd grown up with. But, I'd also learned to not hold onto what was when it comes to creative types, especially musicians. Evolving is essential to our own growth

big low end - I think it's great

Cool sounds, great playing! Love the production!! Love flea of course. Creative vocal lines!

jaimeyperham - Never Stop...

RHCP's never stop recreating hit after hit. They just never stop! Of course John is missed, but Josh does justice to the Chili Pepper Magic. Great new album to a never ending catalogue of RHCP music...

Ev12382 - Good New Sound

Different new sound but not too different. Addictive tracks are on it, too. I like it

Ch33t0 - Standing in your kitchen naked...

Thanks Anthony for a bad mental image while ruining a great band backing you up with crappy lyrics mostly about women half your age. Worst RHCP album ever.

TravisWap - Amazing

The chili peppers are back with an amazing album

juliaciulei - Ya

This album isn't that bad as I thought it would be. I love all of their older music and I actually wasn't so disappointed with this album. Some of the songs sound similar but a mix of different at the same time.

SavageTofu - Great Sleeper.

My favorite song on this album is The Hunter. 5 stars for that song. First time, I listened to this album I wasn't crazy about it. Recently, started listening to it again. I like a lot of the songs. We Turn Red (go team valor) & Goodbye Angel are great. They remind me of things pertaining to my life right now. I love this album for what it is & not what I expected it to be. Expectations kill art. I really like a more mature Red Hot Chili Pepper band. Maybe, because I am an old guy too...

Bobbagington - Great album

Another great by one of my favorite bandsšŸ˜

Music Perveyor - Best Chili's Album To Date

This is by far one of, if not the best Red Hot Chili Peppers albums period. Why?? A full read below but here are some top reasons: 1. No more Rick Rubin producing. Rick has produced every Pepper album since day one and he has done a good job. But every album and song started sounding the same. It was time to mix it up and bring in new ears and creativity. Hence bringing in Brian Burton, aka. Danger Mouse (Radiohead, Sparkle Horse and Beck to name a few). 2. Anthony is actually singing and quite well on many of the albums best kept secrets/tracks (#11, Encore, #12, The Hunter and #13 Dreams of Samurai) These are not the chart toppers or radio hits (Dark Necessities, Go Robot, The Getaway) which are good in their own right. But I'm speaking to the very moody, emotional and melodic tracks with great lyrics and live instruments. These three songs really challenged the band to step outside of their comfort zone. Chad had some hard drumming that was required of him on this album and it's showcased well on "Dreams of Samurai". 3. New guitarist and John Frusciante protege Josh Klinghoffer who not only was hand picked by John when John left the band, but Josh played on John's solo albums. So the John sound is there and more. The solos are there, and the backing vocals are there. If you did not know John left the band it would be hard to tell. 4. The staple sound of the Peppers bass, drums, guitar and Anthony rapping are still there. There's three of four tracks of those as well. Now my back story for the older fans who do not understand that not being relevant = no more record contract. Read on. I'm really trying to wrap my head around all the complainers who say this is a terrible album, hang it up, they're washed up etc.. Get real. Like anything in life (business or personal) one has to stay relevant, current and cave to the trends to some degree. Turn on any radio station these days, or stream any top hits and it's not rock, punk or funk. It's digital computer made disposable crap with a life cycle of 5000 spins. No band, no instruments. Just a singer, artist or whatever the flavor of the label is that given month. It's rare to actually hear a great rock/funk band played on the radio unless the Foo Fighters are putting something new out. For me personally this album has Anthony actually singing and singing well on many songs. And most of those songs (the best ones on the album) are not the radio hits as I mentioned earlier. You need two or three of those to get airtime and be added to the spin rotation and they're getting it to get noticed. You'll still get all the old Peppers songs live in concert or by picking up their other 2016 release By The Way (Live In Poland). Do yourself a favor and download tracts 11- Encore, 12- The Hunter and 13- Dreams of Samurai and listen to each of those five times and I think you will come to the conclusion that these are really well written songs. Dreams of Samurai offers some tasty and hard drumming to be enjoyed by all real musicians. Rock on Peppers.

surehands malone - Truly disappointing.....

From the fight like a brave crew, this is what we get? I'm sure this album will be recalled due to apparently the peppers forgot to wear their balls in the studio when making this album. Overproduced and weak are being kind. Save your money.....Slovak just threw up in his grave....

Oilslick1 - Not red hot

This is not the sound of red hot chili peppers

Konalu - Just enjoy!

Every five years or so, Red Hot Chili Pepper fans are gifted with divine lyrics and transformative music. Their music is always thoughtful and carefully crafted. The group must evolve so they can continue to inspire. Just enjoy their gift and feel the music!

945385743 - Still love em

People hate on this album because it's different. Ya it is, but it's awesome to see them transform as musicians as they get older! Cmon they're not going to sound like Blood Sugar Sex Magik anymore. This is a great album with smooth melodies, great collaboration, and overall upbeat feel.

Monster bulldog - šŸ’Æ

šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ»

Sphen36 - RHCP

I have been a long time fan of the Peppers, none of their albums are the same. Each presents an ever evolving maturity of music. This album cannot be compared to Blood, Sex, Sugar and Magic. This is a good album and what makes bands legendary is evolving their music through the years. Kiddos to the Peppers can't wait to see you in January.

Lightningstar210 - Chili Pepper's just doing their thing!

Like a few other albums it took listening to a few times and love it more every time I listen! They aren't 20 any more and this album shows their growth and doesn't disappoint in any way! Lyrics and music done in true Chili Peppers style like no one else. That's one thing I've always loved about this band, no one like them. Keep on doing your thing! LOVE IT!!! No true Chili Peppers fan should expect this album to sound anything like they've ever done before because they ust don't do that.

boxedh - Evolution

Beautiful transition, organic. More to love.

ShesAmanEater - Classic

I want to thank you and spank you upon your silver skin...

Jagwiper - Great Album! no arguments

Life long RHCP fan. Each album brings a little something different and The Getaway is no exception, bringing a fresh, yet still familiar sound. Sorry, but any negative reviews means the reviewer has not truly listened to each and every song. The Danger Mouse influence is apparent and simply enhances the RHCP sound. These guys are still crushing it!

jamsey_17 - Relax people

So much talk about josh & john. Simply put, I love this album.just like the ones before. I think that some of these reviews were reflections of people's bad day.

Bhaslak - It's Good

I am a fairly new Red Hot Chili Peppers Fan, though I do own most of their albums. This album is pretty good, definitely an improvement since "I'm With You". My favourtie song on the album is "Goodbye Angels". After that, maybe "Go Robot" and "Dark Necessities". I'll admit, I'm a Frusciante fan. His style is just unparalleled. But I do think Josh is doing a great job so far. Josh tends to like notes with wah while John preferred the chords. Chords give a song more beef, so since John left their songs have been a bit more mellow. I like it, its just a different style.

KenRuns - Back to their roots

I went on a gamble with Dark Necesities and it was worth it!!! I'm in love with literally every song in this album! I've replayed this whole album over and over this whole weekend!! It's amust buy!!

Livie q - The Red Hot Chili Peppers are back and still sound great! <3

I'm in love with whatever RHCP does, especially this album. They're doing amazing honestly. 4 years was definitely worth the wait for this albumšŸ¤˜ And guys, stop hating on Josh. John is gone, and he's never coming back to RHCP. We all loved John, but it's time to move on. Josh is honestly the perfect replacement. I love everything the Red Hot Chili Peppers do. I'm a true fan, because I appreciate all of their decisions. If you were a true fan, you would too.

redhotjosh - A masterpiece!!

I grew up listening to RHCP since 1984. I have loved every album, as every album is unique, while still having that chili flavor. This album by far sounds the most different, but I am happy with that. If they release an album that sounds lik Californicatio, I would be upset. I love that these guys could come up with something fresh and still sound great. This album would rank at #3 for me, right under BSSM and Californication and slightly. You can not listen to this album once or twice and make a judgement, just like all classic albums. This album needs to marinate in your bones a dozen times and you will fall in love. After listening to the album about 50 times, none of the songs have grown old on me and there all amazing. If you have to listen to a few songs to get a taste of this chili pepper pie....I would suggest these, as they are my top 7 in order- 1. Goodbye Angels 2. Go Robot 3. Sick Love 4. Encore 5. The getaway 6. The longest Wave 7. Feasting on the Flowers Yes "Dark Neccessities" is not on my top 7, but I love the song. I feel they should release my top 3 as videos (Go Robot already has) as this album will be successful. Buy it and listen to it!!

OldWiseOwl - šŸ‘šŸ½

Great album

ZaloA16 - LISTEN TO IT MORE THAN ONCE.

Disclaimer: LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM MORE THAN ONCE BEFORE REVIEWING IT. Scroll to the bottom for the short review. When Dark Necessities released a while ago, everyone loved it and I thought it was boring. When I listened to this album for the first time, I literally only liked 2 songs. The rest were boring. BUT. I listened to it again a day after its release, and I found myself liking 8 of the 13 songs. Now that I've listened to it four times, I like every song except for Dark Necessities. I'm still giving a five, because though I don't like Dark Necessities, everyone else does, so obviously the 'Peppers are doing something right. This album may be their softest album yet, which isn't a bad thing. It is not like their stuff from the 90's and it is not like their stuff from the 2000's, and it's not even like their stuff from 2011. It is very different. This album has a mix of rock and funk as always for these guys, but this album also adds some synthetic sounds to certain songs that really transform the songs and do not feel out of place or unnecessary, like on Goodbye Angels' 2nd verse or on Go Robot. There's not much loud singing on this album, most of the singing is fairly low in tone, especially near the end with songs like Encore and The Hunter. However, on songs like Detroit and This Ticonderoga, Anthony gets pretty loud. This album, in very specific places, occasionally has a Pop feel to it. The entire song of Go Robot could easily be classified as a pop song. The other songs, however, would have a tough time fitting into a pop category. SHORT REVIEW: Because of this album's soft feel, you probably won't like it at first. I only liked 2 songs on the first listen, but now that I listened to it 4 times I love 12 of the songs. This album is very different from other RHCP albums, and is their softest album yet, which isn't a bad thing.

KorinaJam - Reinvention Keeps Peppers Fresh

These guys could have easily played it safe and kept churning out formula hits for the masses. But RHCP has always bee one step ahead of pop culture and even us, the music lovers who dig their catalogue. Give this new collections of songs a chance. They are deep cuts of strong musicianship, brimming with atmosphere and introspection. Not all the songs are catchy hits. But they grow on you. You're not the same person you were back in college, chugging beers and skipping school. The Peppers were a great soundtrack for those daze, swinging socks and pollinating hip hop and funk. But they're different now just like you're different. They've reinvented once again and it's a joy to listen to

KatieMcF - Loving

RHCP never disappoint! Can't stop playing this.

TJHorness - Bandwagon

I'm gonna be like everyone else that complains that this album since I went into it with a closed mind... This isn't blood sugar sex magic, it's called evolving. Listen to the music for what it is. Open your ears and shut your mouth! If you go into it with these expectations of being let down, what do you expect? This album ain't bad I gave it a few listens through, it's not the same but they aren't at the same point in their lives. The music is still good vibes and good energy. "Turn on, tune in and drop out."

Raawdoll - Go robot

Go robot is probably the only song I like

Furrybooger2 - Great

They have matured as a band, obviously. The piano, funky base and Kedis's vocals take me back to a more carefree time. I heard this once on the radio yesterday and I instantly loved it. Love the slapping bass! Flea is a bass funk master.

JustVampy - Diehard Fan disappointed

I have been a fan since the 80ā€™s. Iā€™m not a Josh hater he does fine IMO, but this album is just soooo disappointing. Iā€™m With You was, sadly just OK too, but much better than this one. IDK what to make of all the tracks on here. The only semi-decent track is Dark Necessities and that is manly due to Fleas bass, but Itā€™s a repeat of the old works. Iā€™m all for bands trying new things, but this didnā€™t work for me and Iā€™m really, really sad about it cause I love my RHCP

Two Big Speedballs - Thanks Danger Mouse!

You ruined another one just like the Black Keys last CD. Not sure went these groups go this route.

Sea-vette - Disappointed RHCP fan :/

"I'm with you" was tolerable. This...is just cringe worthy. They really need to stop making music and just tour. I have not hate towards Josh K but he makes this band terrible now. I'm not able to find one song on this album that I can vibe with.

Prettylittleliar12 - The best.

Buy this album. This is the album where you can have every song stuck in your head. Whether it's from we turn red to encore to goodbye Angels. It's so chill compared to their other albums but there is some funk whether it's flea and his bass or the piano in some songs and plain old funk that we love. I promise you'll be pleased with this buy.

OnInThree - Not worth the $6

ITunes ran a sale on this album and it is still overpriced. The Peppers sold out to make money. Sad to see another super group bite the dust. Too bad.

Nkrupp - A Decent Second Step

Upon Fruscianteā€™s departure, I was very concerned how the band was going to sound with the new album Iā€™m With You. As it turned out, my fears were unfounded; Iā€™m With You was excellent, even if Josh, as the bandā€™s new guitarist, was one of the weaker parts of the overall sound. One could attribute that his being the ā€˜new guyā€™ more than anything else though. With The Getaway, it would appear Josh has taken a stronger second step forward. Songs like the self-titled, "Dark Necessities", and the gloomy ā€œEncoreā€ demonstrate a more ambient approach to the guitar work. However, Josh doesnā€™t appear to be just trying to fill a hole that Frusciante left; this sounds very much like Josh is trying to transcend the previous party-boy sound that the Peppers have been so famous for. What makes this album feel incomplete at times is, unfortunately, Fleaā€™s lack of true presence. While ā€œDark Necessitiesā€ is about what youā€™d expect from the band for the most part, Fleaā€™s bass is fairly kept the background in a majority of the tracks here. Itā€™s surprising, and in all honesty, somewhat disappointing. Part of what has made the Chilli Peppers so great is Fleaā€™s driving bass, working so well in sync with Chad Smithā€™s drumming. That heā€™s more muted here is possibly the biggest let-down of the album. Just as surprising is the lack of emotion displayed by singer Anthony Kiednis, who is known for his enthusiasm. Here, he sings more subdued, and as a whole, the entire record sounds more like a downer than the upper we all anticipated with a new Chili Peppers release. However, those are the only real issues with this new album. Other than that, one can expect plenty of fun tracks as well, even if they feel like B-sides and rarities, songs that didnā€™t make the cut for previous albums that were re-worked. This album is a decent second step forward with a new guitarist. I hope that, should another album come before these old boys call it quits, that it will be even better.

Whgdfjj - Great album

Wow! I almost didn't buy this album because of all of the snarky negative reviews. But that would have been a huge mistake. This album is great! If you are a peppers fan, you need this album and will love it. This album is deep, stripped down, and intimate. I had my doubts after the last album, but Josh's guitar and song-writing really gels into something great in this album. Just realized that all the negative reviews I read before were before the album was actually released and actually listened to. Enjoy. I am.

Arondale - Best Album since MM & BSSM

Itā€™s easy call this album this RHCPā€™s comeback album. After listening to a couple of interviews, Anthony mentioned that Danger Mouse pushed himself and the band to give their best instead of settling. They needed this. It takes balls to tell a band with such history and success that what heā€™s hearing is not their best. Donā€™t go home, come up with something new, now, until you do. There are only 3 songs I dislike on the album, mainly the slow jams, like the longest wave. The new sounds are fresh and do not overshadow the vocals, drums, or bassā€¦ which is key to their typical funk formula. Goodbye Angels, Sick Love, Go Robot are my new favorites of the album, despite the prowess sounds coming from The Getaway, Dark Necessities. & Feasting on the Flowers (my original favorite of the album). The total pace change tempo found in This Ticonderogaā€¦ while We Turn Red shows us the funk sound we are all used too. Dreams of a Samurai is probably the biggest change for me that I like. Samurai uses a lot of piano and is more of a journey song, taking you from slow rhythms in the 1st minute, to complex, yet a wall of sound and vocals that work as a new sound to embrace. Iā€™ve listened to the album about 20x nowā€¦ and 9 of the songs I can just put on repeat all day long and not get tired of them. I had high expectations when learning about this project, but did not at all think this band was as capable of pulling out such a quality album. So much care was put into this album and the resulting playlist of new sound now has me going back to all their other albums and some of the lesser played albumsā€¦ which only a Great album will make you want to doā€¦ search for more great treasures from the band. Six stars on this comeback album.. dare I label it that. For those ā€œJohnā€ fans that think RHCP lost their way without himā€¦ listen to Johnā€™s experimental trip / drum machine / acid music and you will see that John is not at ALL in the same place today as he was up until 2009. That said, donā€™t expect that John to re-appear with RHCP until John starts producing the same guitar prowess we are used to. Only then would he maybe get an invite back to the band, but unlikely. This album rocks, as is!

ThisAppSuxs - Hands down--will be a RHCP Classic

Such an underrated and muscially artistic album, from front to back. You could literally have the album on repeat for hours and it won't get old. 5/5

NuPicasso - Lā¤ļøVE!

This has quickly become one of my favorite Chili Pepper albums. Right below Californication for me. #2ThumbsUp

Deliweli8 - Peace & Love

JUST LISTEN TO THE MUSIC FOR WHAT IT IS WITHOUT THE COMPARISON OF WHAT IT USED TO BE! You'll come to appreciate it. This is definitely not a garbage album.

Akiakdnqa - Keep listening

So far I'm really enjoying this album. After the last album, I wasn't really sure where RHCP were going to go with their style since John left, but I think this is a good start. No, I don't enjoy every song on this album, and some of the lyrics are interesting, but after listening to it a couple times and focusing more than just the surface of the song, I've really come to love this album and can't stop listening to it.

ryanmetallica - Great album

They still got it! And I'd give my left nut to see them when they come to Philly

Justin Revis - Frusciante?

Man, you Frusciante fanatics are a bunch of cry babies!!! The album was innovative, thoughtful, and full of life and depth. With Danger Mouse's help, Anton The Swan, and his intrepid crew of Chili Peppers created an album tailor-made for a good night drive that also tapped into the funk of their Freaky Styley days.
