The New Abnormal by The Strokes Album Info

"The New Abnormal" is the sixth studio album by American rock band The Strokes. It was released on April 10, 2020, through Cult and RCA Records. It comes nearly seven years after March 2013’s Comedown Machine, although the band had reunited briefly to release a three-track EP titled "Future Present Past" in June 2016. The album title "The New Abnormal" is a reference to the present age of environmental disaster. “There were these huge fires in Los Angeles,” Julian about their time recording. “A lot of houses burned down but Shangri-La survived, by some miracle. That’s where the name of the album comes from, the extreme weather, the violence…” Rumors of the album’s production began in July 2017, when Albert Hammond—father of The Strokes’ guitarist, Albert Hammond Jr.—mentioned that the band was in-studio with producer Rick Rubin in an interview with The West Australian. This rumor was quickly dispelled by Hammond Jr. in a since-deleted tweet, claiming: “Forgive Albert Sr he got prematurely excited. A lot of unknowns and nothing worth speaking about at this time.” He did concede, however, that “We met and played a few music ideas for Rick to feel out a vibe, but even a theoretical album plan would be years away, if at all.” Damage control continued with Julian joking on Twitter, saying: "(What Albert Sr meant to say is we are working with NBA point guard Ricky Rubio on a new offense for our basketball league)" Back in December 2018, the band announced a series of tour dates and a “global comeback” for 2019. The first event took place at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on May 13, where they performed a new song, titled “The Adults Are Talking.” The last concert of 2019 took place on New Year’s Eve at the Barclays Center in their hometown of Brooklyn, New York. They performed a new song titled “Ode to the Mets.” Julian Casablancas then confirmed: "Yeah, we’ve got a new album coming out soon. 2020, here we come. The 2010s, whatever the fuck they’re called, we took ‘em off. And now we’ve been unfrozen and we’re back. If you really love someone, you’ll be frozen with them. You know what? I don’t know what I say generally, and I ramble a lot, but I lo"ve you guys, and it’s a real honor to share the stage and this night with you guys. - via Rolling Stone (January 2020) News around the album’s actual release began on February 7, 2020, when Albert Hammond Jr. tweeted: “You think you’ve been waiting. But the wait has just begun. Welcome to the new abnormal.” Similar videos and promotions began appearing on the band members’ social media pages and billboards around the world. Leaked ASCAP listings for “songs written by Julian Casablancas” also revealed the tracklist and various co-writers on the album, including pop-rock icon Billy Idol. A few days later on February 10, 2020, the band played a live political rally in support of presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. A short musical snippet of “At the Door” played before the concert, foretelling of the song’s official release the next day, along with the music video and the upcoming album’s tracklist and album art. The band also performed a new song titled “Bad Decisions,” which was released the following Tuesday, February 18, 2020, along with its accompanying music video. According to Albert Hammond Jr.’s Twitter, this would be the first official single for the new record. On April 6, 2020, the band released “Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus” as the final single preceding the album’s release. The New Abnormal debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200 during the chart week of April 26, 2020 after selling approximately 35,000 album-equivalent units during its first week. On March 14, 2021, The Strokes won their first-ever Grammy Award for Best Rock Album of the Year at the 63rd Grammy Awards.

Harmontoo - Disappointed!

Start “At the door” tracks 5-9 solid, tracks 1-5 mediocre. Doesn’t compare to Voidz Projects, I prefer my Strokes a bit tighter. Still disappointed AHJr doesn’t get to shine on here. Their 2016 EP was better than this, happy we got new Strokes 2020. Rock Rubin touch is not needed or asked for, try again boys in 7 years.

elletee24 - The Strokes Are BACK

Such a great cohesive sound & consistent throughout the album. Once you start listening, you won’t want to stop! 🔥

amorra84 - So good

Solid from start to finish! Brilliant release and addition to an outstanding catalog of music. Seems The Stroke were “making Good decisions” for The New Abnormal. 👍🏼🔥

LFRCHI - Great album. Great time. Great tunes.

Evolved Strokes. Love it.

julian is the truth - Best band ever

Best band ever

Persona 4 - Best Strokes Album In Over A Decade

This is the first album from the band that feels like a consistent package since First Impressions of Earth (a lackluster album). Angles and Comedown Machine were better than First Impressions but lacked the consistency that The New Abnormal has. There is no filler except maybe the very Billy Idol inspired Bad Decisions. None of the songs are bad or what I would rate under a 5/10. The Adults Are Talking and Ode to the Mets are standout tracks that are easily 10/10’s.

Woody12337 - Wow

This album is a masterpiece. And I’ve only ever been a casual fan before this album. Incredible!

Nas434 - It’s decent

It’s okay. Not something I will play all the time.

Sir_good_body - Never Disappoint 🖤

Loved it

yawie819 - Change can be good...

Obviously The Strokes have changed over time, and not everyone likes that, but I was pleasantly surprised by this album. They’ve changed, but it’s still them.

KimPachis - Worth the wait

I’m just happy they made a new album

inihilum - I'm crying

Have been waiting for this for so long. This is beautiful QAQ

SodaPopBob - Movement Forward

Understated, yet complex with both a clarity and consistent sense of purpose. Truly a masterpiece!

Breon Hunt - They’re Back

I’ve loved the Strokes ever since I discovered them. Glad I preordered this. My favorite track is “The Adults are Talking” This album made me realize once again rock isn’t dead!

bigmilkcartons - Fantastic. Some of The Strokes Best Work!!

An absolutely brilliant album, musically, lyrically; an all around more mature sound for the band an interesting direction to take. Just beautiful💗

karmawearswhiteties - Da best

The modern day Beetles

svn-fngrs - We waited 9 years for this!?!??!

What a disappointment.

jfar22 - Reformed

The strokes on this album have never sounded better since FIOE. This album makes comedown machine look like trash. This album is not perfect but it does beat angles and comedown machine on my list. The opener and closer on this album are the best tracks the strokes have made since FIOE. The pros: This album contains some of the strokes most mature pieces of work. The vocals on this album is highlight of this thing. Every song is always redeemed in the incredible ness of the vocals. The guitar playing on the album is excellent and the instrumentation is great in general. The cons: There is no real direction in which the strokes are heading in. I don’t know where I am gonna find them on their next LP. Flow, the flow of this album isn’t perfect and snips of the album feel out of place. Length: the album has about 2-3 minutes of unnecessary length to the album. No, I’m not talking about the end of why are Sunday’s so depressing and the end of TAAT. I’m talking about end of Not the same anymore( just feels a little too long) and the last 30 seconds of eternal summer, and the intro to ode to the Mets( what is that sound?) Overall I will say, the album will definitely grow over time for many people. I give it an 8.5/10.

JAD 2 - ❤️

It’s beautiful

jeffazp - Wow. Just wow!!

Decided to check this album out ended up listening to every second of every song. This is the Strokes best work to date they really made some fantastic music. Every song is good.

MGZ MERCH - Better than I thought at first

This album was released at a weird time but now I have a bunch of new music to listen to. Every song is strong, the adults are talking is a great beginner with good guitar work, selfless is a masterpiece mainly due to julian’s vocals, eternal summer is a catchy high vocal summer song that is great, why are Sunday’s so depressing is a complex giddy tune that sounds amazing, not the same anymore is a beautiful emotional performance and everyone does an amazing job, and ode to the Mets is an excellent eerie story of a song. All the singles were equally as good, and while at first listen I was a bit skeptical, this album has become my third favorite, right behind FIOE and room on fire.

jackbringe - Amazing

Haven’t heard this good of chemistry between the guys since “Is This It.” Love the overall vibe of the album. 10/10

Ed in C-Town - This album follows the rule, not the exception...

When bands get older, they get lamer. The Strokes used to ROCK. This is boring

Ignacio2693 - An instant classic

Finally, a strokes album that sounds like they dropped all of the tension the band had with the previous 2 albums and are just having fun. Really refreshing to hear that shine through on each song. The more I listen to it the better it gets. There’s honestly no bad songs on here which is why I gave it 5 stars.

livluvmusic - New album finally

Yes!!!

Trying Your Luck - They definitely did it again

Love their new more experimental sound. This is such a great album.

justice™ - The new Abnormal has some old

This album is a beautiful culmination of their old style and their new.

BePink7 - Classic

The Strokes have a way of making nearly every song classic in its own way. This record does not miss the mark by any means. Already in love with it.

jrod8403 - Love it!!!

Omg! I have been waiting for them to come out with some new music. Great sounds. Live the beats.

JackOfStrobels - Excellent

This is a grower, and with every listen I love it ever more.

Tjx27 - Its them again

This is the first time in years The Strokes have sounded like themselves. Love it.

Amata 5 - Long wait is over!

The Strokes are back with the calming voice of Julian Casablancas and the band’s unique sound! This whole album will be on repeat for the foreseeable future 😌

Andres matute - Blew my expectations

After Comedown Machine, I practically lost hope that The Strokes would ever return to form. But after their EP in 2016, there was hope. That hope is shown in this album. Love it.

ARMANDO 29 - Huge Fan

I’ve been a huge fan for decades I love this latest album

Darkkahn - Awesome

Awesome

discoalien555 - THEYRE BACK

But more importantly they’ve found their sound again

Jahshwiwoskjfkslakw - A great work of art

Worth every second of the wait and worth every second of listening to your ears. Compact, epic, moving and my personal favorite release so far this year.

Doody balls - Best album since room on fire

Ye haw!!!

Robyn Anays - Because they can’t do no wrong.

I LOVE The Strokes ♥️ JFC

Techfanman - Rick Rubin works his magic again!

The Strokes best album in years! Brilliant!!

Riox2014 - Comforting

This new album will solve all your worries by taking you to place of peace.

CrotaPrime - You can’t rush perfection. Well worth the wait!

This album only has 9 songs as opposed to the average 11-13 tracks (without taking into account any bonus tracks or live performances added onto the end of the LP) . I was nervous because I thought they were going to pull an Arctic Monkeys (releasing the confusing and disappointing album “Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino” four years after arguably their best LP entitled “AM”) but I listened to The New Abnormal and I felt deep shame for ever doubting Julian Casablancas. That was my bad guys. Fantastic album! 5/5

Nightingale of Riften - 😱

I can listen to the whole album from beginning to end over and over again for hours. Masterpiece of an album they took out. Really great work the Strokes did. 😎⚡️

Collbath89 - A great comeback album

Just when I think rock is dead, leave it to the strokes to bring it back (again). It’s far and away their best album since their first.

NyxII - About Time

I’ve been so looking forward to this album’s release and it doesn’t disappoint.

Emileye101 - Perfect album

Each song is incredible. Just an amazing album, beginning to end. My first Strokes album, but not my last.

negativecreep96 - Right on!

Album came out well with what I pretty much expected. Great album!
