Heaven and Hell Album Download

Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath Album Info

Heaven and Hell is the ninth studio album by Black Sabbath, released in 1980. This is their first album featuring Ronnie James Dio, and first with producer Martin Birch. Heaven and Hell became one of Black Sabbath's best-selling albums, revitalising Sabbath's fortunes after what many saw as the death of the group following original lead singer Ozzy Osbourne's departure. The album was rereleased in the Black Sabbath box set The Rules of Hell. The album was quite successful, becoming their highest charting album (#9 UK, #28 USA) since 1975's Sabotage and the third highest selling album of Black Sabbath. Ronnie James Dio himself cites the title track as his over-all personal favourite song of his career, the one of which he feels most proud. This was the first album after singer Ozzy Osbourne was fired from the band and replaced with Ronnie James Dio. Geoff Nicholls of Quartz also joined the band as a possible replacement for Geezer Butler who had not been around through most of the writing sessions and was going through a divorce at the time. When Butler decided to stay with the group, Nicholls switched to keyboards. Nicholls remained as Black Sabbath's keyboard player for over twenty years, usually playing live shows from off-stage. Drummer Bill Ward completed this album, but drinking and other personal factors would eventually lead him to drop out of the subsequent tour. His mid-tour replacement Vinny Appice would become an official member. The exact origins of much of this album's material is still a topic of debate. Osbourne apparently attempted to record some of what would become "Heaven and Hell" before being fired; all of this material was scrapped. Sabbath had in fact begun demoing material with singer Ronnie James Dio before Osbourne was formally fired. The song "Children of the Sea" was written by Dio and Iommi during their very first session. When Butler returned to the recording studio, all but one track ("Neon Knights") had already been written for the album. Former Elf and Rainbow bassist Craig Gruber was said to have been brought in temporarily for these sessions, and rumours were circulated (although recently dispelled by Iommi) that it was Gruber who actually played on the album. Bill Ward says he has "no memory" of making the album, due in part to his alcoholism. It is unclear how much of the album, if any, was actually written by bassist Geezer Butler or drummer Bill Ward. The album's cover art was taken from a painting by artist Lynn Curlee, entitled "Smoking Angels". Curlee was also commissioned to do an album cover for Blue Öyster Cult by Sandy Pearlman who was at the time manager of both Black Sabbath and Blue Öyster Cult. "Children of the Sea" This was the first song written by the new line-up of Sabbath and resulted from an impromptu jam session with Ronnie James Dio shortly before he joined the band. "Heaven and Hell" The title track was written mainly by Tony Iommi, but credit is given to the entire band. The lyrics were written entirely by Dio. In Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, Dio explains the song is about how every individual has "heaven and hell" inside him or herself, as well the ability and the choice whether to choose good or evil. In live performances by Black Sabbath or Dio, the song is usually stretched out with extended guitar solos, audience participation, and new or ad libbed lyrics. When Ian Gillan was in the band, "Heaven and Hell" featured on the US Tour and was included in the RKO "Captured Live" performance. Tony Martin also sang the song live with Black Sabbath as well as with his solo band. The song ranked #81 on VH1's list of the top 100 hard rock songs. The song is featured on the soundtrack for the 2007 movie Halloween and the 2008 video game Grand Theft Auto IV.

LaJango - Great

The song Heaven and Hell is one of the most incredible songs made; the Intro being unmatched.

Hunting pro uber 23 - Love it

It's heaven to listen to not hell

KrunchDown - Honestly, the BEST Sabbath Album.

The early/Ozzy Sabbath albums are classic blueprints, but they never finish the job. In the early 80s a musical miracle occurred. Both Ozzy and Sabbath peaked individually without each other. Ozzy's masterpieces with RR are immortal, and Sabbath with Dio, "Heaven and Hell" to be precise. The Mob Rules is great too, but this IS the one. The divided outcome (Sabbath/Ozzy) was much greater than the product of the previous whole. Worth every penny!

abbadd - R.I.P

GOD OF METAL

sonnyespinoza - We love ya Ronnie

We have listened and loved your music for years. We will continue to listen and love your music

Riley0529 - Bow down to the metal GODS

First off I love the Ozzy years, some of the greatest most iconic songs ever, but this album just flat out rocks! Start to finish it's what classic hard rock/ heavy metal is all about. And what a finish lonely is the word is a hard driving fist pounding masterpiece one of my fav songs of all time. We miss you Ronnie!!!

Jimnrg - 30 years in my library

I'm a huge Ozzy fan and with that in mind I have to say this is THE best work Sabbath has ever done. It is also the only album/cassette/CD that has been in my library nonstop since the day it was released. Musically this is the most well- balanced collaboration of the original members on instruments and Dio's unique and amazing voice complimented that perfrctly

–TheArtist - One of the greatest Rock albums EVER!!!

And at only 8 songs! It's also one of those albums where each song goes nicely into the next. RIP Dio, a true great and will be missed!

1TRIK - R.I.P. Ronnie

Well Ronnie, you pulled a big impact on all of us. This album shows it well. Heaven And Hell comes close to topping Paranoid and is there best peice of work in the Dio years. The title track is a masterpeice, and all metal fans should not only look up to it, but buy it. That, Children of The Sea, and Neon Knights could be considered the main attractions of the album.

richthatcher - A confident return to life for Black Sabbath

The naysayers said it couldn't be done without Ozzy, but the band persevered and turned out a landmark album at a time when Metal was being reborn both in Europe and the USA. The band sounds super tight with a great mix that enhances the band in every song. My favorite tracks are "Neon Nights" and "Die Young".

LP/GnRfan - RIP RJD

Just got news RJD died because of stomach cancer. This is some of his best work in my metal opinion. Cherish this music and the man who did what ozzy couldn't do, give black sabbath a booming voice that matches the music. Much love Ronnie the kindest metal star you'll ever know. Rock wherever you are.

Mikeyruzz - Looking down on all of us

Ronnie is now on the Silver Mountain, flashing the double Devil horns! Thanks for all the great music...you will never ever be forgotten, at least by this metal fan...love this album, cant get enough and 10 is not loud enough... _\m/

CarlosArauz30 - Classic Metal

This album is a classic and it's the only great Sabbath album on iTunes.

majikman1967 - R.I.P. R.J.D.

Sing me a song, you're a singer

F and S apps - Rock the heavens Ronnie

Great album

Johnknight1 - The greatest Black Sabbath album, ever! DIO IS FOREVER THE GOD OF METAL!!!

Not to diss the Ozzy, Tony Martin, or other eras (or albums) of Black Sabbath, but Black Sabbath's Heaven & Hell will always be my favorite. It's so heavy. You need to hear it-now! Every song is a perfect ten, and Ronnie James Dio is truly a mad man genius all over this record (he replaces Ozzy Osbourne-who had left in 1979), and Ronnie James Dio is by far the greatest singer Black Sabbath-or heavy metal-EVER had! My favorite tracks are as follow: Neon Knights Children of the Sea Lady Evil Heaven and Hell Wishing Well Die Young Walk Away Lonely is the Word Basically every track is a classic, and if you don't own this album-you don't know what METAL IS!!! Lastly and most importantly, God bless Ronnie James Dio. He died on May 16th, 2010 at 7:45 A.M., and he will not be forgotten. May he rest in peace in a much better place, because quite frankly "The world is full of kings and queens, who blind your eyes, and steal your dreams!" He was truly the only man who could die in his 60's and still DIE YOUNG! He never would WALK AWAY, always was kind and performed shows in American when he only sold about 300 tickets (and probably lost thousands of dollars!). He truly was a WISHING WELL of great music, was the opposite of LADY EVIL, was one of the few classy NEON KNIGHTS, a true few CHILDREN OF THE SEA. He was the one who exposed us that the world was truly all about HEAVEN AND HELL, and sadly the world of music is not the same anymore. LONELY IS THE WORD indeed. God bless Ronnie James Dio. His music will live in my life, my family's life, and my descendants' lives for years and years to come. He will be missed, never forgotten, and his music will NEVER stop being played in my household!

Kristian Josifoski - My first Dio album

This was my first Dio album.I still get chills from hearing the songs on here. There a timeless piece of art in metal history! R.I.P. Metal God

Pottts - Black Sabbath w/ Ozzy and Dio Amazing...

I am a huge Sabbath fan with Ozzy. I am also a huge Rainbow and Dio fan. Thought when Ozzy left Sabbath it was all over. Much to my pleasure, Dio took Sabbath in a new direction. Pick up Mob Rules, Heaven and Hell, and Live Evil. A fresh and hard hitting look at Sabbath post-Ozzy. DIO R.I.P.

jack13cool - R.I.P Dio

I heard the news today that Ronnie James Dio has passed away. One of the greatest voices in music has gone. This is a must have album for any who appreciates not only metal but all music. Thanks for the music Ronnie! You will be missed but will live forever in your music

Mercenary Rocker - May Ronnie James Dio Rest in Peace

I was only seven years old at the time this album came out. It was a time when I was into Kiss' version of disco and the growing number of pop acts in Canada at the time. It wasn't until 1990 that I discovered this tape in a 1986 Suburban that I bought. The previous owner had the volume knob all the way up and I had the chorus of Heaven and Hell thrown right at me. Despite the fact that the music was at a semi deafening level, I didn't adjust the volume. This was the metal that I missed while listening to Guns and Roses, Poison, Motley Crue etc. This was untamed, soul full metal vocals of a Ronnie James Dio of Portsmouth, New Hampshire USA. And could Ronnie sing. All in all, this is my favorite Black Sabbath album.

RMLamp - Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell

Bought it when it was new and still one the greatest hard rock albums today. Tens stars on five star scale.

parthenon - Some of Sabbath's as well as Dio's (r.i.p.) best work

There are certain people who personify all that is great about metal: The unpretentiousness, the fun, the soul and the raw power. Nobody ever put it all in one package like the great Ronnie James Dio! This album represents some of his greatest work and proved that Sabbath could create heavy rock/metal for the ages even without their erstwhile, erratic first lead singer who of course was also brilliant...

Big__White__Guy - ronnie r.i.p

Ronnie rest in peace we all miss you a metal god died with stomach cancer we wish you were still alive. You made a master peice here creater of the metal devil horns

htskot - One of the best albums of all time

Heaven and Hell was the come back album for Black Sabbath after Ozzy left. Sabbath then made Ronnie James Dio the frontman and suddenly everything changed. This album is worth it. You can't call yourself a Sabbath fan if you do not have this in your collection. So buy it already!

johnfromtaiwan - essential

A must for any and all Sabbath and/or Dio fans. this album started a new generation of metal that still stands up today.

T34RZ - Lucky

I feel like a a very lucky person, as i was able to see Dio and Black Sabbath last August at Meadow Brooke Music Fest. My original intentions of going to that concert was not to see "Heaven and Hell" as they are called now, but to see Cohee dand Cambria who was opening up for them. For them being as up in age as they were, I was amazed, it was undeniably the best concert Ive ever expirienced, and the first.. I also felt lucky that I got to see Dio one time before he passed away.. Incredible album. 5 stars for the best band ever!

kill'emall - What?

wheres paranoid?????? ps: R.I.P Ronnie James Dio You had one of the best vocals in metal of all time :)

Nicholas Sol - True Classic

These songs have the same Black Sabbath sound that all their listeners have learned to love. The album starts off with a bang with Neon Knights, and doesn't let up for the whole album. Dio really showed what he could do in Black Sabbath with this album.

-HeavyMetal- - R.I.P.

Metal Legend!!

501mph - Great.

Ronnie may be deceased, but we still have his fantastic music to listen to. Of course, his music will live on forever, as some of the best metal ever created~ Fantastic album~

B.D.M. - Absolute, True classic

When Ozzy left Sabbath in 1979, it seemed like Ozzy's and Sabbath's careers were over. But in 1980, they both came out on top. Ozzy had Blizzard of Ozz and Sabbath had Heaven And Hell, which is considered to be one of their best. Ozzy is replaced by the outstanding, fantastic amazing Ronnie James Dio. He gave Sabbath new life and brought them to a whole new audience of metal fans. Neon knights opens the album and they tear it up with one of the fiercest Tony Iommi riffs ever and of course Ronnie's singing stands out on the album, as it did when he was with rainbow. His voice stands out on tracks like Children Of The Sea, the title track and Die Young. This was definitely an acceptance that Sabbath was back and the album still holds up to this day.

namvet7071 - Heaven and Hell

DID NOT RECEIVE - HOW MANY TIMES DO i AHVE TO SEND THIS???????????????

T-1000 - One of Black Sabbath's best

When Ozzy Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath, everyone assumed it was the end for the band. But when Ronnie James Dio took his place, he proved everyone wrong. RIP. Dio

GLBJEB - Dio Rules !!!!!!!!!!!!

How was there only one review. Black Sabbath were the originators of metal. The addtion of Ronny James Dio was groundbreaking, he is an amazing singer. Tony, Geezer, and Vinny create an amazing foundation, while Dio brought an awe inpiring sense of flare. SABBATH/HEAVEN AND HELL = GREATNESS !!!!!!!!!!

Martin Kilner - Heavan and Hell, All Time Classic!

...if this is not in your collection, you aint a Rocker, go buy it now!

CraventheHunter - It's a long way to nowhere and wer leaving fairly soon.....

one of the top five metal albums of all time.....a must for any yougster that is interested in knowing what all the fuss was about in the 80's......between the Russian threat, aids, the war on drugs, and ultra conservative parents that were tryng to raise a the picture perfect family - we kids were stuck between Heaven and Hell. this album, to this day, still doesnt disappoint.

Astroman2112 - A true Master Piece of Metal

RIP Ronnie, \,,/, Probably my favorite all time Ronnie James Dio album. This Ranks quite high as Sabbath album as well. Here Sabbath re-invents its self rising from fading ambers to be a white hot and relevant force in the new Metal scene of the day. Still very relevant today and no signs of sounding dated. Definitely worth the purchase! \,,/,

BadBoy_9802 - R.I.P.

Ally New York - Dio rules

Domenickr - Lonely is the word - R.I.P Ronnie

Ronnie, as a metal head from the 70's and 80's you were and still one of my idols. Your music always had a story in every song that keep me my ears against the speakers (my mom always told me that would give me hearing problems, she was right, as usual) LOL to hear story of the song. There are few that tell stories with their songs, probably none as good as you. You have left a legacy that will live on forever. I can tell you after my record wore out, then my eight track and then my cassette. I got a long way to go to wear out my CD's. Were ever you are at my friend you are introducing them to a new kind of music, the music of Ronnie James Dio! Rock on my Friend.
