Unlike many, many reviews written by people who expect "Battle Studies" to be the next "Continuum", this review isn't to insult John Mayer or point out that he didn't put any thought into this new album. It's to show why change in music is a necessity. The problem John was facing was either to try and duplicate "Continuum" and get crowds to fall in love with the new album, or to change directions and start something different. Now although "Continuum" is still better and more popular (By a long shot) than "Battle Studies", "Battle Studies" is a small picture of something big to come. The 'Good Ole' Days' are gone, and you can't try to relive them. Otherwise you'd have people complaining' that "Battle Studies" is just another "Continuum" ' , or 'this album doesn't do "Continuum" justice'. So instead of insulting or complaining that John's lazy, remember he did what many musicians are afraid to do: Change. If you aren't satisfied with this album, just listen to "Continuum" and wait for another. And if you give "Battle Studies" a chance, I think you'll find that there are several songs that are classic John Mayer in it. Thanks for reading, and "Like" this if you agree.

It's not that I don't like his music, which I don't like either, but also I don't like what he did to Taylor Swift and others.. he's such a player.. :pp He trys to act so innocent and makes his songs about things like waiting on the world to change, but he's the one who should change

I believe this album has so much to give, while other people are expecting something else. We all know Continuum, was a new atmosphere from his previous works, Room For Squares and Heavier Things, and was a great success. But with this album, its different once again. That's what great about John Mayer, he can experiment with different genres, and he pretty much nails all of them. With Battle Studies, you see deep emotion in some of his songs, like 'Who Says, Edge of Desire, and Heartbreak Warfare', and you also have some songs you wouldn't expect from John, like 'Assassin'. Also another thing that people are getting fussy about, is how there is no real show of how John Mayer's guitar talents, and the thing is, I was totally fine without it. Yes, he is an amazing guitarist, and I wish I could play as good as him (I'm sure we all do), but you have to focus on his lyrics. He is one of my favorite lyricists, if not my favorite out of them all, and has been all the way back from 'No Such Thing'. I hope to see something different next album, and for him to rock the house once again.

I would say it's john's worst album, but it's still amazing. I believe he is the best musician of our time. From what I hear he is a douche, but who isn't in Hollywood. As long as he keeps his liberal bs to himself, I'm fine with him. He's just like every other famous jerk. As far as music goes, he's incredible. Great guitar, great vocals. On this album, I really like assassin, edge of desire, and crossroads. Some of the other songs sound like he is selling out to the teenage girl population, and some sound straight out of the house of blues(which is cool I think.) Buy it!

I'm a huge fan of John's work on the Try! album where he truly played the blues and shredded on the guitar. That's all but gone here, and we get... pop rock. Just when I had hope for the future of music, too.

He's also a douchebag

I have and enjoy many of John's past albums, and being the type of fan that I am, I jumped at purchasing this album rather than to check songs/lyrics before purchasing. I agree with the other poor reviews, that his guitar playing is lazy, lyrics are more so. I will not be listening to all of the songs on this album. He is an amazing musician, I am just disappointed that his lyrics are now intertwined with his political views so much that it distracts from his music genius. He says that's just who he is, it's my own fault for not doing my due diligence in researching before I bought.

Over time many musicians keep putting out albums just to pay the bills. Not Mayer. He writes like it's his first album and he has nothing to gain but personal satisfaction.

If you listen to the lyrics they are some of the most powerful that I've heard from him. Edge of Desire, shows so much emotion and raw human nature that I can't help but love the album just off that. This album may be different from Continuum but its suppossed to be. No comparisson. All his albums are flawless.

john mayer never ceases to amaze and wow me with his intricate lyrics and soft melodies. assassin, edge of desire, and slow dancing in a burning room all melt my heart and i cant help but get lost in them over and over again.

I hate John Mayer he kisses and tells! And to think he went and messed with T. Swift who I happen to love? Not a chance I'll give you another chance Mayer!! I used to love you! So much for that:P But I do love your music... Grrr haha. So yeah great album but TERRIBLE person! Too bad you would have gotten 4 or 5 stars... Oh well :p

If u are a John Mayer fan u have to get this! This is his best album so fat and I would know cuz I have all his albums and I know every song by him. This album has so many great songs starting from assassin,who says, perfectly lonely,edge of desire,do you know me,friends lovers or nothing and I haven't even listed the popular songs like heart break warfare and half of my heart. I love Adele so much but I would put this album b4 Adeles

John Mayer has become one of my favorite artists, this album is amazing! All i want to know is when his next album is coming?!

Its an awsome album but continuum is better because it's not as dark and theirs better guitar. Continuum has more fast paced songs. But don't get me wrong, this is a great album. Totally worth your money.

Seriously, the only ones who give bad reviews are ones who don't want him to get a full 5 stars!

I've been a long time Mayer fan. In fact, Mayer is my favorite artist/musician, but Battle Studies is not a strong album. One of the reviews here said that this album feels thrown together with unimaginative lyrics and weak arrangements. That is completely accurate. There are a couple songs on this album that I do think are good, but I can't really get through any of the tracks without at least one moment of "Dude, c'mon..." Mayer's past work has been so good that standards are high and that certainly affects the listening experience, but the issue with this album is that it feels so creatively uninvested. He may not have been able to "follow-up" Continuum, but he's still an artist and the least he could have done is care about and invest in this album. As far as I can tell, from listening to this album, Mayer neither cared about nor invested himself in Battle Studies... at least not as much as an artist should in something they create. I don't doubt that Mayer will reestablish his standard, and I really can't wait for his next album.

Many people disliked this album, saying this is completely not the usual JM and its unoriginal, lazy, and sloppy. However, I strongly disagree. Battle Studies is a great album, which, once you listen to two or more times, grows on you, almost like an epidemic. Some of these songs can just put you into a good mood, with a smile, while others seem to put things in perspective: love, war; it all makes sense. Something about this album stands out, and has slowly grown on me to the point where I can never listen to a song halfway, I gotta finish it. Say what you will, but this album hits the spot. If you're a John Mayer fan, dont hesitate to click the buy button. Just as usual, he never fails to impress. Bravo John. Bravo.

Not one of his best albums. It was leaning toasted a pop friendly radio album. But it was okay for me. John Mayer is a great musician, awesome guitarist and singer, but the biggest player ever. And for the person with the Taylor Swift comment. Seriously? John Mayer doesn't need Taylor Swift to get noticed among teens. I should know. I'm 15.

John Mayer can play guitar, I grant that. Sure he went to Berklee, and B.B. King knows no chords, can't read music, and blows John out of the water. It's about soul, and John is a cheeseball who writes rubbish lyrics and trashes the women he dated. What a loser. Plus, he looks really stupid when he plays guitar. I 'll never forget what he said in Rolling Stone about looking for the Joshua Tree of all... What a loser and what a racist.

In this album, John doesn't hide himself behind pithy lyrics. He is brilliantly poetic but he is blatantly honest with you. Every track on this album is easy to listen to and calming. "Do You Know Me" brings to mind driving down a warm country road and just thinking. The album as a whole has this same feeling - a return to simpler things for both the artist and listener.

johns trying to take more of a blues turn while trying to please his pop fans at the same time, so the music really isn't like anything he's put out before, and he didn't want to build of continuum he wanted to start something completely new, it's kinda dark and sad, which is because he is trying to turn kinda bluesy, but i feel like it still has the pop lined in it. when you first listen to it it's really nothing special, but if you let it grow on you its really deep with songs like war of my life and edge of desire. is it a master piece... no, but its a really really good album. if you don't like it at first just give it time and you'll get it

Love it! Maybe not as much as his other efforts, but I just really enjoy his music and his voice. He writes well and from a the place he feels he is at that point in his life.

The title of this review pretty much says it all. A mediocre album by a amazing musician. John needs to pull himself out of the depressing funk he is in and get back to his roots. It sounds like he didn't even really try. I am not saying the album is bad in anyway. The sound & production are very good. It's just the attitude and the pulse of the album is dead. But compare to most mainstream music out there right now. It's really good.

I like it! But really the only song I seriously like is Heartbreak Warfare. I like the other songs too though, but H.W. is my favorite. John was absolutely right about this not following Continuum at all. This album is supposed to be different, and it is! Different is good! Looking forward to the next singles or albums (which ever comes first).

Call him a "douche" but his music speaks for its self. He is one of those artist who's music you love and performances are great but you'd rather they just "shut up and sing" lol. Kind of like Kanye West. Or maybe they are both just misunderstood. Anyway I like this album but to me it came off kind of too country. Still, it was good stuff.

Mayer is great, a increible discography from Room for Squares to Battle Studies, this is an increible album, the return of John Mayer.

First off, it would have been impossible to top Continuum. Mayer made one of the best albums of the decade, one that transcended genre barriers and modern day limitations. Try following that up... Clearly, Mayer had to depart from that, go into a different direction. In some moments, it really works (Edge of Desire, Assassin), and sometimes in really doesn't (Who Says may be the worst song of his career). But the point is that he didn't just churn out Contiuum/Heavier Things/ Room For Squares part 2, he's trying to experiment with new things. It may not always work, but expanding musical horizons is the sign of a true great artist.

Every album or John's has been amazing. From Room For Squares to Battle Studies you can't really choose one favorite, because you love them all. Or thats my case at least. I am not going to tell you what songs you must choose to have. I say you buy the whole album. Crossroads has been nominated for a couple of Grammy's this year. Another thing nominated for a Grammy is the album in general. Yes it may be up against Justin Bieber's new album or Lady Gaga's. But John has my vote. Good song writing and I hope he comes out with another album.

I think John Mayer is an incredible song writer and singer; but, if you listen to John's lyrics, he is a mess. He thinks love is a battle (it shouldn't be) He can't commit to relationships He has accepted loneliness He talks of getting drunk and sleeping around There is probably more I didn't get. I'm not saying John's a bad guy, but he's definetely hurting. Just a thought. Please consider :)

John Mayer is good but this album is awful I HATE Half of my Heart.

Wow some of you are terrible... Stop ripping the dudes heart and soul into pieces. If you truly believe your opinions and observations must be heard, than try putting it into a song like Mayer. See what it feels like to have your musical abilities dissected... Stop this blogging nonsense and go bleed for years developing your own talents And who ever said the guitar playing on this album is lazy clearly clearly isn't a guitar player.

John Mayer is a real artist who understands how to make music that feels good...he changes his style because a real artist can expand and truely make music not just in the musical place that they started in but move in different directions...,,most artists fail because they dont have real talent . Thank you John Mayer for inspiring me as a fellow musicain and please cont making more music...

If you like John Mayer, you'll like the album. If you loved John's more daring work, you won't like this album. It's a pleasant, somewhat foregettable, pop radio friendly work. It's better than most of what you hear lately, but not nearly as good as his more sophisticated blues guitar heavy music.

Wait, what? A mainstream musician with actual talent?? OH. MY. GOD. My mind is officially blown. Anyway, John Mayer is a cool cat, and Battle Studies does him great justice. Do yourself a favor, and bask yourself in some of John's awesomeness by listening/buying this awesome album. And if you don't buy the entire album, at least consider listening to: Who Says, Edge of Desire, Heartbreak Warfare, and Friends, Lovers, or Nothing (his most awesome song of all!). YAY!

I discovered johns music on pandora on the jack Johnson station & heard Gravity. After I started listening more & more to all his other songs & I looooovveee his songs so much! He's got alot of different beat songs, fast, bluesy, & just plain beautiful! Edge Of Desire is by far my most FAVORITE song & it just completely give me chills! Definitely recommended. He's really just a poet. His music is more complex, so all the boneheads with negative reviews are probably just too closed minded because they listen to the straight forward music where you don't have to think about what he means to get the point. He is great on guitar & unlike most artist now a days can actually sing live & not sound completely tone deaf! He's truely a brilliant artist & I am absolutely in love! 
