Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes Album Info

Helplessness Blues is the second studio album by Seattle-based folk band Fleet Foxes (release: May 02, 2011 on Bella Union) - leaked almost six weeks prior to the release). Initially, Robin Pecknold had stated he would like the album to be released in 2009; however, the band's touring schedule had caused them some setbacks. They got together to rehearse new songs in February 2009 in a rented house outside Seattle, but the sessions were mostly scrapped. As a result of those wasted sessions, the band lost $60,000 of their own money. After their tour in support of the 2008 releases ended, the band's singer-songwriter mentioned the possibility of starting to record new songs, but Joshua Tillman, Fleet Foxes' drummer and co-song arranger, was scheduled to play Europe and North America all along the 2009-10 winter as part of his solo musical act. Added to this, Philip Ek, the band's producer and friend answered in an interview that he was likely to continue as the producer as Robin had already sent him some demos to start listening to. In an interview with Pitchfork, Pecknold stated he expected the album to be released sometime in the second half of 2010. The incredible care Pecknold put into the album was painstaking, creating turmoil in his personal relationships. In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Pecknold admitted that his girlfriend of five years found the stress this album placed on their relationship too much, and ended things. Upon hearing the completed album, she realized that Pecknold's efforts were worth it and they are working it out. Pecknold has come out saying for their second album he tried to sound "less poppy, less upbeat and more groove-based". Taking inspiration from Roy Harper's psychedelic folk album Stormcock, or at least its 12-string guitar he said: "That will be the primary sonic distancing from the last record". Added to this, he stated they wanted to record very quickly, saying he wanted to do the "vocal takes in one go, so even if there are fuck-ups, I want them to be on there. I want there to be guitar mistakes. I want there to be not totally flawless vocals. I want to record it and have that kind of cohesive sound. Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, to me, is the best-sounding album because it sounds like there were only six hours in the universe for that album to be recorded in. So I want it to have that feeling." The band had recorded since April 2010 in different locations (including West Hurley, New York) after two years of writing material and decided to scrap the earlier idea of a fast recording (though according to the band, the vocal takes as of yet have all been done in one take, perhaps in line with the original imperfect recording idea). In a press release from the band on January 31st, 2011, it was revealed that former Blood Brothers and Past Lives multi-instrumentalist Morgan Henderson had been officially added to the Fleet Foxes lineup. The album cover was illustrated by Seattle artist Toby Liebowitz and painted by artist Christopher Alderson. The title track, "Helplessness Blues" was released via free download on January 31st, 2011, and the album's fourth track, "Battery Kinzie" premiered on Zane Lowe's show on March 22nd, 2011. Their record label, Sub Pop, also released a downloadable music video made up of recording and other miscellaneous footage set to Fleet Foxes' song "Grown Ocean" on its site in support of the album. Additionally, the band released a 12" double A-side single of the title track backed with "Grown Ocean" for Record Store Day on April 16th, 2011. Sites: Discogs

bc-mab - what happened!?

Did fame ruin this band!? I loved the direction of Mykonos but that sound is lost in the new album. Helplessness Blues sounds WAY too 70s, hippy-ish, subdued and happy. Mykonos along with most songs on the first album have edge, depth and meaning which seems to be lacking in the new album. Sorry Fleet Foxes I'll look forward to the next album which will hopefully be a progression from "hapless" blues.

Corrbin - All the same

Every song sounds the same, it's 2012 not 68!

Soulfulrobot - flawless

i hope to see them live one day

means... - Best/Favorite

This album is the best and/or my favorite album of all time!!!! Well done FF!!! We (the world) is sooo glad to have you in our lives!!!

Knopfler15 - Brilliant

First of all, let me just say that this album is absolutely amazing. I don't think I've ever heard such great music that has come out during my lifetime. No band today in my opinion can compare to the stuff that Fleet Foxes releases. Secondly, it really angers me that so many people are saying that this album is not as great as the last one because it is too redolent of past musicians, such as the Beach Boys, Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, etc. Their first album was fantastic as well, don't get me wrong, but this album is just as good if not better than the first one BECAUSE of its similarities to these past musicians. To me, it is sensational that some artists are still reminiscent of the older music because it is so much better than almost everything else that is released today. Fleet Foxes keeps that tradition going, and with their own flare as well with Helplessness Blues. It really an album after its time, and there is nothing as bittersweet. It is sad that the great music has passed, but hopefully Fleet Foxes will start a trend, and great music will resurface again.

Joe nejedly - Flawless

Fleet foxes always finds a way to into the nooks n crannies of my soul. If I had an orchard I'd work till I'm sore.

sincerelycynical - May be my favorite album of the year so far!

I have been a casual Fleet Foxes listener over the past few years. Several of their songs have moved me but as a whole, they haven't done a whole lot for me. This album, however, is exceptional. This album is a true artform. That, combined with the distinct style of this band, has created a masterpiece.

PancakeFace - Addicted

Fleet Foxes has officially become my new favorite band of late, and possibly of my life. For anyone who appreciates depth in music should consider buying this CD. BTW They aren't too shabby live either. I saw them last week at the Fillmore in Denver and it was the greatest show I've ever been too. It cannot be put into words as to how much I love every song produced by Fleet Foxes.

Jade Dearborn - Signed. Sealed. Delivered.

This band NEVER fails to deliver. I've been listening to them for about 4 years now and they just keep getting better and better. EXCELLENT. Love my "Washington Mushroom" band. Loved the show at the Ryman in Nashville.

Pitabreadd - Perfection.

This album couldn't be anymore perfect.

RoaringNight - Oh, Misguided Public...

This album is absolutely spectacular. The warmth in Robin's voice, combined with the progressing palate of instruments and instrumentation that the Foxes use, creates a brilliant overall album. Those people claiming that this is "more of the same" need to listen again. There are a variety of different types of music on this album; can you honestly tell me that the free jazz at the end of "The Shrine / An Argument" was more of the same? No. Can you tell me that the middle-east influences in "Sim Sala Bim" were present in the first album? No. There is serious progression in this album: a clearly darker feel, and a far larger array of sounds brought on by Robin & Co. If you need serious convincing, listen to the first 0:48 of the aforementioned "The Shrine / An Argument". If you can tell me that you knew Robin had that in him, then either you're in the band or you're plain wrong.

Eaglezzz - Strong Sophomore Effort

As you can see Fleet Foxes are not shy when it comes to using a variety of musical instruments in their songs. All those instruments mixed with Peckhold's vocals and you have something that is clearly special. On the first two tracks "Montezuma' and 'Bedouin Dress' you get a sense at how the album is going to fall into place and you hear that classy indie sound with all the instruments mixed with fantastic lyrics. You get a little more feeling that this albums takes a turn to a slight country/folk sound with 'Sim Sala Bim' as it almost turns into a partial hoedown jam at the end of the song. 'Battery Kinzie' is a refreshing indie boomer that mixes in the piano sounds creating a perfect all around song. 'The Plains/Bitter Dancer' is a slower number which matches it lyrics. Then comes the title track 'Helplessness Blues' which has been out for a few months and yet every time you hear it - it continues to sound like it is the first time you heard it. This is the song that teased us for a few months with its awesomeness and begged us to want to hear the rest of the album. 'The Cascades' is a combination of some lovely string noises that really bring the song to life with no vocals even needed. 'Lorelai' feels like the most sincere song on the entire album with its vocals stealing the show. 'Someone You'd Admire' has to be my favourite track next to the title track. It has a peaceful, acoustic feel that creates a gorgeous melody that you want to continue past the 2:29 song length. If there was any song that I have wanted to last longer in 2011 this would be the song. 'The Shrine/Argument' is next in line and it is almost opposite of the song before going on for 8+ minutes. The songs tempo goes up and down throughout its length almost giving a album feel to the song, it itself is a work of art. The last couple of songs are 'Blue Spotted Tail' and the familiar "Grown Ocean' that we have heard as well. They both offer decent closure to the album and put a smile on your face when the album is over. The sounds on all the tracks are really clean and crisp - something you would never realize with the amount of instruments being used. In conclusion you have to say that Fleet Foxes truly know how to release an album Indie Style. This will go down as a highlight album in the year 2011 on alot of peoples albums of the year. I know at FPT it is in the running for top album.

hippophile - a 21st century version of...

Simon & Garfunkel

Jisaacs14 - Outstanding

Words can't describe how amazing this album is. It's pure poetry.

Jimifan4778 - Best of 2011

This should be at the top of everyones Years Best list. It really blew my expectations away. Beautiful.

Stonefeather - Stonefeather

Great stuff! Fantastic ear candy.

JV19 - Kentucky Lake

My favorite album ever.. I like to listen while driving through the woods in the middle of nowhere in land between the lakes.

kazykensie - More of "The Cascades"

I was admittedly anxious about Helplessness Blues at first, because I loved their first album to pieces. But man, they sure cranked out a second album equally as beautiful as their first. There are so many new elements to this album, including new instruments. I also love "Blue Spotted Tail" and it's acoustic feel, as well as the intensity of "The Shrine/An Argument." Possibly my favorite track is "The Cascades," though. The entirely instrumental song shows a remarkable new side to Fleet Foxes, and to put it simply, I would LOVE and album made up of the kind of stuff that shows up in "The Cascades." It's such a whimsical, magical track and I think an album of similar pieces would be the perfect background for a trivial day at work or for a day dream. Amazing second album, and I can't wait for a third!

Stephen Sixx - Talent gave notice and quit.

But atleast I can tell this lead singer is a guy... But not by much.

StevieBreen - looking at its long term value, also

When listening to this album today, I find it difficult to judge its immediate greatness. It's one of those albums that you're going to go back to 30, 35 years down the line. When your kids ask you what you used to listen to, you aren't going to tell them what you actually listened to, which was Top 40 house and pop. You'll tell them, "Listen to this album called Helpnessless Blues." And they'll say confusingly, "Helplessness Blues? That sounds dated. Archaic." "No," you'll say in reply. "It's timeless."

WrtngThsInstdofWrtngPapers - They Did It Again

No way did I think Fleet Foxes could ever top their first album...but they may have just done it. This album is ridiculously good.

CellBay - Hands down best album of 2011 so far!!

Fleet Foxes have taken it to a whole new level and Helplessness Blues has now become one of my favorite albums of ALL time. Put it this way....You won't be able to stop listening and will feel incredible spiritually!!! And if you can, catch them while they are tour! They are even better live!

Bradley S. Maskell - If you hate music now...

This band will make you love it again.

bare-footer - Ughhh

Huge fan of the EPs and first cd, but this is just tedious. The problem I have is the lyrics. They are just clumsy with an extreme overuse of the words "I" and "ME". It's fine for that kind of writing in your journal, but when writing a song I think it is lame. As another reviewer has mentioned, Midlake's "The Courage of Others" is far more refined and far better than this. Sorry. I was so excited about this release, but listening to it, it just got on my nerves. Hope the next one is better...

S33tb1ts - Brilliant

Great melodies and lyrics, imaginative instrumentation and production. Just plain great.

joshua Cazares - This band keeps blowing my mind away!

This album is amazing!! "Montezuma" hooks you in to the album right away and the rest of the songs dont let you go. If you havent bought their first album I highly recommend that you buy that one too. If this band ever breaks up I am going to crawl in a cornor and die.

aliauthor - distinct among snowflakes

This album has been playing in my car since it came out. The rich, lush sound on the title song is gorgeous and the lyrics strike a deep chord. "Blue Spotted Tail" and "Lorelai" are favorites, but the album is one that needs to be listened to start to finish. This, friends, is real music-- I can't decide if I like the debut album or this one better.

TeeJayNeeMan - What a 2nd album! Better than the first! Wow! So great!

I really can't believe they did it. I still can't believe it even after listening to the album over and over again for 6 months. I just can't believe Fleet Foxes out-did their debut album (which everyone agrees, is truly special) with this beautiful, touching, deep, complex, epic album: Helplessness Blues. I have done the math (thanks to iTunes play-count) and I have listened to this album at least 27 times, but some songs (I will list the play-counts next to the song descriptions) much, much more. I will try to keep this review brief, but I don’t know how I can. I have been waiting to write this long, detailed review forever! “Montezuma” – (63 plays!) – I didn’t truly understand the greatness of this song until around 20 listens, once I understood how truly beautiful the song was, I listened to it the other 43 times in a roughly 2 week period! Yes, it is slow, but man the 2:13-2:35 part by itself is amazing! (10/10) “Bedouin Dress” – (49 plays) – This is another one that hit me late. What really makes this song special is the violin part that kicks in at 0:45, and then BAM, the take-off at 1:15. I also like how it builds (as many of this album’s songs do), and of course the 1:47-2:15 part. Truly a song that will grow on you! (9.5/10) “Sim Sala Bim” – (43 plays) – Wow, the beginning is so special, I mean beginnings like this is what made FF’s debut album very special, and once again the song takes off at 0:45 with “then the earth shook”. I love the lyric: “What makes me love you despite the reservations, what do I see in your eyes? Besides my reflection hanging high.” Like the first two songs, it will grow on you. (9/10) “Battery Kinzie” – (36 plays) – Now here is a song that needs no growth, it will stick to you the first listen. Very catchy, yes, but I regret to say that it is probably the weakest song on this great album. It’s not until the 0:58 mark that the song has any impact. It’s still a good song but after so many listens, it does not hold up like many of the other deeper, more complex songs. (8/10) “The Plains/Bitter Dancer” – (35 plays) – You wanna talk about complex and deep? Look no further than this hidden gem in the album. It is going to be the hardest song for non-hardcore FF fans to grasp, and even devoted fans will scratch their heads after the first few listens. I originally had this song as one of the weaker songs (as most of you probably did at first), but boy was I wrong. The lyrics, the tone, everything comes together. I do have to say the first half is better, with the last 1:30 being a little repetitive. (9/10) “Helplessness Blues” – (57 plays) - I listened to this song before the album was released, and wow, did it ever get me excited for what my ears were going to eventually enjoy or what?! This song stands out immediately, especially if you were a fan of the first album or FF in general. The lyrics are truly special, of course with the opening lines (about being unique) but also with: “I don’t need to be kind to the armies of night that will do such injustice to you, or bow down and be grateful and say sure take all that you see, to the men who move on me in dimly-lit halls that determine my future for me.” Like I said, great lyrics. I love how it is a two-part song and swiftly changes at the midway point to something truly special.: “If I had an orchard…” and so forth. What a song that is so deserving of being Helplessness Blues’ title track. Wow. (10/10!) “Loreai” – (46 plays) – Here we go. Right from the start, you know that you are in for a beautiful, touching ride. This was initially my favorite song on the album, and for a while there, it was listened to over and over till exhaustion! So catchy, and unlike Battery Kinzie, this song is super deep, for example the bridge section 2:11-2:57. One of FF’s best songs ever! (10/10) “Something You’d Admire” – (52 plays) – Now this song, you might listen to it a few times and miss it completely. It is so quiet, so subtle, but I think it might be the best song on the album. It is definitely the most heart-felt song on the album, and that is saying a lot. “One of them only wants to be someone you’d admire….one would as soon just throw you on the fire.” Truly special, truly one of the best FF songs ever. (10/10) “The Shrine / An Argument” – (46 plays) – This song proves that Fleet Foxes aren’t just some happy forest folk band, they can go dark and they can go deep and in this song, they go to the extremes of both. This is unlike any other FF song not just because of its’ dark tones and Robin yelling “Sunlight over me, no matter what I do”, and the crazy sax-solo at the end, it is unlike any other FF song because it stands alone as a testament to how great this band is and how they can evolve their sound. This song isn’t just dark, it is plain eerie. I mean the “green apples hang from my tree” part still leaves me with shivers. This song is the only song on the album I can say is unlike any other FF song, and it works! (unlike a lot of other bands’ attempts to go outside their comfort zones). Truly a musical masterpiece! (10/10!) “Grown Ocean” – (44 plays) – Here we go! What a way to finish an album! I am so glad they didn’t finish it with Blue Spotted Tail or Something You’d Admire (both good songs mind you), I am glad that they left with a statement song, a song that you can pound your fists on the steering wheel to (as I have done numerous times). I love the sections such as 2:05-2:16 with the flutes…they make the song! And who can forget the beautiful ending: “Wide eyed walker, don’t betray me, I will wake one day, don’t delay me. Wide eyed leaver, always going.” Wow. (10/10!) Running out of space (that's why I skipped two song descriptions): I have to say, I am glad I finally wrote this review. Few will read it, but those who do will know the passion I have for this album and hopefully they will have a passion for it themselves. If I could give it 6 stars, I would! Superb sophmore album for FF!

Vfigueroa - Amazing

One of my favorite albums of all time. This album just takes me to another place when I listen to it. All the songs are beautiful in there own way. Buy this album you will not regret it. The first album was great but I have to say I think this one tops it. Fleet Foxes LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to see them live.

jazoo - Stunning Sonic Washes

I'm not at all into folk. So dull. But this sound transcends labels. If you like vocal music, jangly guitar, and melodic invention, this is for you. It has elements that recall Crosby Stills, etc, Simon Garf, yes, but I also hear Sparks, Smiths, Lush, in lesser details. Battery Kinzie will wake you up to the possibilities, and Grown Ocean should seal the deal. Give it a listen. Buy the whole thing.

belfalas84 - Outstanding album

Good work gentlemen. : )

Z Case - Helplessness Blues

The title track is my new favorite song, though I bought it three days ago, I've already played Helplessness Blues 326 times. I also love The Shrine/An Argument (Sunlight Over Me No Matter What I Do!), but the end is ear-murdering. When the horns start, I know to quickly change the song. They should've finished that one at "Apples in the summer are cold and sweet."

Typhotion - Awesome

Amazing

Yep, It's Yepoh - I Don't Think Five Stars Are Enough

This album has changed my life...it is absolutely the most beautiful, insightful, evocative, interwoven, LOVELY music I've ever heard. I STRONGLY encourage buying the entire album. I first purchased the single "Helplessness Blues" and loved it. But the true magic comes from the way each song connects to the others. Honestly, I couldn't name a favorite track or even a few stand-outs. I know I always read these iTunes reviews just to see which two or so tracks I should download from the whole -- don't do that! You will not regret purchasing the entire Helplessness Blues. Some of the songs do take a bit more listening than others in order to fully appreciate their intricate power, but don't be afraid to set this album on loop. Also, watch the official video for "Grown Ocean." It sums up the exhilarating feeling I get from this album. Much love to Fleet Foxes.

Clint Hebert - Unbelievable

The Fleet Foxes best work yet! A magnificant album that i would easily recommend to anyone!

JStoles - This is what it sounds like when a band matures...

...and matures beautifully. Lyrically, this album is more emotional, more vulnerable than the last one. Such fantastic songs here, both delicate and expansive. I love it.

jasonrivera - Wow..

AMAZING!!!

GinaP. - You absolutely need this album.

I bought this CD, After being a long time Feet foxes fan, and I can't get enough of it! It's been the only thing playing in my car, on my ipod, when i'm working for the last 2 months. Fleet foxes are incredible. <3

Fray in NH - Helplessness Blues - Exquisite

This is just exquisite - so reminiscent of Brian WIlson and Simon and Garfunkle. Hard to capture a mix of these two incredible artists and still maintain your own identity. Fleet Foxes have done it. Bravo ! - Mark in NH

kayakgirl17 - Definitely worth the wait

Absolutely Brilliant!

ShaqNess - Unique

Incredible sounds and fantastic harmonies. A real great album that more then exceeded expectations considering I didn't thing they would be able to top their previous.

Sourcesoftheriver - Yay

Graham Nashish

PhillieFan - Fabulous

The key with the Fleet Foxes is their great melodies. If you don't have great melodies, you can't have great harmonies, and Helplessness Blues has a lot of great harmonies. Bst album of the year, beating out Radiohead's King of Limbs and a underachieving MMJ album. Helplessness BLues the best song, though the opener, Sim Sala Bim, Battery Kinzie, The Shirne, Cascades are all great (though Shrine is ruined by the ending part). Beautiful album.

Amadeus2112 - You can decide...

I loved Fleet Foxes' first album and their EP's were outstanding. Those were the albums that stuck with me for years and I still listen to them quite a lot. Those albums were so new and it seemed like it was such an honest effort by every band member, none of which were trying to out play each other. The vocals harmonious, the guitar work insightful, and the overall feel of those albums was so down to earth. However, Helplessness Blues seemed like a step in the wrong direction. I feel like Pecknold turned honest musicianship into a "me show". For some reason I felt like the band was just playing together; that's it, just "playing" to back up Pecknold. While the guitar work is a bit more complex I feel like it had lost clarity in its expression. The lyrics seemed dull and lacked the old FF feel. I listened to this record non stop for a week. I thought I loved it, then I went back to their older stuff and realized how non FF Helplessness Blues seemed. This record seemed overproduced and as if Pecknold was trying to prove that the band was amazing to all his critics. There are a few songs that deserve respect e.g. Grown Ocean, Bedouin Dress, Sim Sala Bim... But that is it to me. I wouldn't be so hard on this record if I didn't know what these boys were capable of. They can turn out some great stuff but this album was tedious and a downer. To a newer fan it may be gold but to me it is a bronze medal effort. I expected too much I guess.... By the way, the crazy horn section in The Shrine/An Arguement completely ripped off Radiohead's "The National Anthem".

Flannel love - Maybe the beards helped!

Brilliant Album! I honestly wasn't sure what to expect with this one but I am soooo plesantly surprised. It just keeps getting better!

Venturestein - Great Live Show

I saw Fleet Foxes last night in Denver, they are amazing live. The show was fantastic every song was well performed and fantastic. Buy all available FF you can, you can't go wrong!

KaterSP - Impressive! This album resonates and will not disappoint!

I don't know what it is about the Fleet Foxes but they have a real talent and the more I listen, the better they seem. After only the second time hearing "Helplessness Blues" I was drawn in to the captivating melodies and the imaginative and yearning lyrics. The title track is a real gem but if you're like me you'll find yourself listening to this album over and over. I first found Fleet Foxes on iTunes with "White Winter Hymnal" and was immediately interested. I was a bit sceptical that Helplessness Blues would be at the same caliber as some of the earlier albums since groups sometimes stagnate. That is not the case and if anything I think Helplessness Blues surpasses their earlier works. Thank you iTunes. And thank you Fleet Foxes for producing such great music!

earsonfire - Someone You'd Admire

Angelic voices form the bed for inner-conflict and question.

FCR93 - Wonderful and Soulful

I knew from the first listen that this album was worth a purchase, but I had no idea I would come to love it so much. There's so much soul behind these songs, and I haven't stopped listening since I bought the album a few weeks ago. Great for staring at the ceiling or reading on a rainy day.

BubsterThe3rd - You Know It When You Hear It

I always find the 'hippie' or 'emo' smear with this band ludicrous. The problem is that very few people actually have an ear for first-rate talent. I think Fleet Foxes seem to be taking their time which is great because to me this album is a sign that they are going to last. I'm not getting into particulars for an iTunes fan review. Don't even by it from iTunes. Get it on vinyl if you can. Their first album became a part of me so much that dozens of places now remind me of their songs. I'm sure this album will be no different. This band is brilliant.
