Death Magnetic by Metallica Album Info

Death Magnetic was released on September 12, 2008. Metallica's ninth studio album, it was the first to be produced by Rick Rubin. It was recorded April 2007–May 2008. It is the band's first studio album to feature current bassist Robert Trujillo. Death Magnetic is also the band's first studio album released through Warner Bros. Records, although they still remain with Warner Music Group, which also owns their previous label, Elektra Records. Outside of North America, they are distributed by Universal Music Group as they remain signed to Vertigo Records in the United Kingdom. The album was well received by fans and critics alike, and has been considered a return to form for the band in the mold of the band's classic albums Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and ...And Justice for All. However, it has been criticised for its sound quality, as all commercially available releases were mixed at an unusually loud volume that resulted in digital clipping, causing the album to have low dynamic range and a muffled sound. The album's mastering engineer Ted Jensen stated that he was dissatisfied with the final product. The version of the album released through Guitar Hero III did not feature these problems, and several fan-made mixes of this version became popular as a result. A remaster of the album featuring significantly expanded dynamic range was eventually released through iTunes in 2015 and through Metallica's official website in 2016. Four outtakes from this album's sessions were released in 2012 as Beyond Magnetic. Grammy Nominations (4) Best Rock Album Best Metal Performance ("My Apocalypse") Best Rock Instrumental Performance ("Suicide & Redemption") Best Recording Package Platinum Album in the U.S., Gold in the U.K. Fifth consecutive Metallica album to debut at number 1 on the Billboard 200 in the US. fire fury - Great album, get it.

If you like Metallica than get this album, it goes really hard and that's what they should be.

tweeker540 - Musical kick to the junk

Sasly, I missed out on much things that are Metallica growing up. The Black Album was the first album I ever owed, mainly due to Enter Sandman. When I bought this album, I was completely blown away with what I heard. Been a few years now and I have a hard time NOT listening to this album. This is one of those records that WILL stand the test of time. Hear-stopping, adrenaline-pumping, no holds barred rush. Don't listen to those negative reviews, those people are pussies. This is an album worth buying, regardless of price.

omgyes!!! - They got my money twice for this album

The original version sounded so bad I rarely listen to it. It's finally fixed but unfortunately I had to shell out more cash for it.

plasticpitchfork909 - The Death of Hi-Fi

Rick Rubin does it... Did he do this one? I don't know. Metallica's early 80's records are little rough because they weren't rich and powerful and recording tech wasn't quite what it is today. Too bad none of that matters because all the clarity and dynamic range that digital can offer is smashed into a decibel or 2 at the very top. I met an assistant engineer that worked Rick Rubin in 2002, he was "alumni" of my "school." I probably will never be a professional audio engineer, but if I ever was to, I like to think that if Rick Ruin was working on a project and I got invited to work on it, I would say no. Even if it destroyed my chances at ever working in LA again. Listen to Master of Puppets or even the oft hated upon Black Album and then listen to this. Make sure Sound Check is on in your iDevice or iTunes. Then this one again. Tell me about those 5 stars.

Warhead '45 - A gift after all these years

I like pretty much everything Metallica put out, but this is truly a return to the true power Metallica has.

Jermiller - Great!

This is an awesome record with some really intense instrumental work and solid vocals!

atomic_mass - Poor quality

A good album musically, made unlistenable by the poor quality of the recording.

65Bug - Really?

This is the worst music EVER it hardly has any lyrics and the music is lame! If you want to hear some real tunes I suggest nickleback!

Si4 94 - Without Music, Life Would Be a Mistake.

Much better than their previous album, St. Anger I mean...

Vick Hater - Why did I wait so long!!!!

I wish I would've just listen to this when it came out instead of listening to all the haters, Best work from them since the 80's period

Iliterallydontcare - Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

They really think they can sound EXACTLY how they did in the 80s!?! After spending a long time on Load, Reload, and St. Anger, they've lost their talent, and this has got to be bad. The Production is also just terrible, because they only cared about being the "Loudest" band. Well, they were loud, but it sounded just plain bad. The best way to enjoy the album is listening to the GUITAR HERO versions of all the songs. That Was Just Your Life 9/10 The End of the Line 9.5/10 Broken, Beat & Scarred 9.5/10 The Day That Never Comes 10/10 All Nightmare Long 10/10 Cyanide 9.5/10 The Unforgiven III 8.5/10 The Judas Kiss 9/10 Suicide & Redemption 10/10 My Apocalypse 9/10 Ok, so The Day That Never Comes, All Nightmare Long, and Suicide & Redemption were all great songs, but the album as whole sounds more like Lulu without Lou Reed than 80s thrash.

Gabe4307 - Idrk anymore man

I have /Metallica\ songs, these ones sound too clear, I like the ones all before Y2K, I kind of like the old version but this is still good.

Paradise_City_Kitty - I can't stand the mastering

When I bought this cd I thought that it was damaged - SERIOUSLY. That is how bad the mastering was. I eventually sold it to a used cd shop. I love the music but the mastering was disturbing. Please fix the mastering or whatever it is. I am not an expert in those areas but I know it could sound better. 5 stars for the songwriting. I love Metallica.

goats rule - Great Album!

There some great songs on this Album! Great solos!

Xenon8282 - SO UNDERRATED

Warning- this is not for the people who liked only the black album and load. This is full on thrash, and I love this album. It's completely underrated. In my opinion, it's better than the black album. And for those of you who like this, you have your priorities are out of whack. The Day that Never Comes is good, but it's not the best one on the album. The essentials- All Nightmare long, Cyanide, SUICIDE AND REDEMPTION!!!!, That Was Just Your Life, maybe The Day That Never Comes and My Apocalypse. Also check out Hate Train on Beyond Magnetic, which is epic and should have made the cut for Death Magnetic. Anyway, this is a great thrash album and is completely underrated. Oh and for all the jerks hating on this album for the fact that it is very loud, there's something in the rock world that's very rarely heard of. It's called turning the volume down. Try it sometime

😊😊⚽⚽😊😊 - Brilliant, but a few issues regarding sound quality

Once again, Metallica are able to put together another fantastic album. Some of the band's best riffs and harmonies come off of this record. "That Was Just Your Life", "All Nightmare Long", and the instrumental "Suicide & Redemption" stand out in this regard. Aside from the excellent guitar work, James Hetfield is able to prove he's still got writing talent after the admittedly poor lyrics from some of the band's previous albums. "The Day That Never Comes" and "The End of the Line" come to mind here. To end with a bang Metallica are able to capture a very raw, aggressive sound in the finale, "My Apocalypse." This album certainly isn't for everyone, though. A majority of the songs clock in at nearly eight minutes, with "Suicide & Redemption" being a hefty 9:57. Additionally, the sound quality is, quite frankly, appalling. Rick Rubin, the producer, seemed to have cranked all volume knobs to "11" and ripped them out of the socket on this album. Overall, this album is very enjoyable, as the sound quality doesn't seem to be too big of an issue, and the lengthy songs are crafted in such a way that keeps listeners from getting bored, which is a quite difficult thing to do in this era of three-minute pop songs. Overall rating is 92/100.

Blepp - Learn to adjust.

Music production today is not meant for ear buds that come with an iPod or iPhone. The speakers inside a studio where albums are mixed cover all the nuances. People who say this album has poor production just need to learn to adjust their settings to satisfy their ears. I hear plenty of bass and low end when I turn my bass up to where I want. It also drowns out some of Lars' snare. This album is incredible. Kirk is back with a vengeance! So is Metallica. Listen 3-5 times before reviewing and use quality speakers or headphones.

JohnP.Kimbler - Unforgiven 3??

At least 2 had the same base melody that made it clearly a sequel, this not all that great of a song is just some random new jam that got stuck with this title but no real ties to the first 2,nothing about it sounds "Unforgiven"

Brybarion - Good

I like it. I guess this will be the last album they do. Only nine since 1983. They arent getting any younger. I have to say I have actually moved on to other bands that are actually making music and not spending all of their time overseas. However, I was thrilled when it came out. I like it 10 up on whatever St. Anger was. Any Tallica fan would dig. It does once again have a different sound to it. They change with every album they do. The change isnt always for the best. The first three were thrash, next two heavy metal, load & Reload-hard rock, St. Anger- no one is really sure, and death mag-combo thrash/money riffs. I'm not touching Lulu. What if they called it Deth Magnetic. Dave would have S*#t.

Salvatallica - THE KINGS OF METAL ARE BACK!!

when it comes down too full on thrashing militia, METALLICA are one of the only few that can really define what that really means. PERIOD!!!! also one more thing to all you complainers when it comes down to METALLICA and TRASH being put together there is no such thing as TOO LOUD, deal with it!!!

thrash8026 - Give it up already please

I grew up on Metallica. They were one of the pioneers of hardcore. I see many people comparing this to their earlier stuff, and that is part of the problem. They are still trying to put themselves out there as a hardcore band. The problem with that is they don't have a hardcore drummer. Lars still sounds like he did 30yrs ago. He hasn't gotten any better over the years. When you listen to his drumming compared to what other drummers are doing he is simply sub par. They are a great rock and roll band. The Black Album, Load, and Reload are excellent at being heavy rock offerings. Please give up the charade of being a metal band. As long as Lars keeps playing like he does you will simply be a great rock band.

Zmaniac1993 - Incredible

Another great success for thrash metal and Metallica.

AdoggRCR - Only IF ....

This album only had an instrumental version, I would rate it a five!!!! I'd buy it twice over.

MiketheMongoose - How did I miss this album?

What can I say? I pretty much wrote off Metallica after a string of questionable albums. Load was okay; ReLoad not so much; St. Anger...yeah I checked out after hearing that steaming pile. Then I caught "Through The Never" on Netflix the other night and Googled some lyrics to a song I'd never heard them play, and it lead me to the Death Magnetic album. I really wish I'd have given it a listen back in '08, but it's better late than never and it gives me hope that they'll release something else new soon.

Tami Bailey - Amazing

Just started listening to this album and it is purely awesome. The songs are perfect and so is the band. Metallica forever!!!

EZiur74 - Indeed Epic!!

I hadn't sat to listen to a Metallica release since black album came out, 20+ ago. Decided to try DM and have to say I think it's their best and most balanced album they've done. Really blown away how good the whole thing is..., not a bad song on here. My favorite is "Judas Kiss".

ED VED of METALLICA - Great, amazing, fantastic album!

It's fast, loud, and aggressive and violent. The guitars and drums and James's voice/the lyrics are amazing. It is a lot like their first few albums, and it is really well composed. Some of the best songs are: Cyanide The Unforgiven 3 All Nightmare Long That Just Your Life End of the Line FANTASTIC ALBUM METALLICA! (The best band in the world)

nutsheller - Please Remix

Metallica, if you give one iota about your fans, have someone remix (correct the original drum submix). I want to listen to it, I really want to like it, but I can’t stand the mix!!! Admit it was bad, re-release it, and I will be happy to buy another copy IF AND ONLY IF IT IS MIXED BETTER!! I literally tried to adjust my purchased copy in Garageband and it is better, but still unlistenable.

BlackSoxxxx00 - Great Comeback

this album is something Metallica needed dearly after st. Anger, st. anger was an underrated album but it wasn't good (for Metallica) Metallica is one of the greatest bands in history because of their ability to put out great quality albums, after the black album things went slightly down hill but it didn't hit rock bottom and this album definitely brought them back up

Turtle99 - Raw Metallica

This is 100% raw Metallica. Literally the only problem with this album is the bass drum. Even so it's not even close to the crappiness of the st anger drums *shudders*

Jack Panama - New MFiT Corrects Loudness Issue

The new 2015 Mastered for iTunes version finally makes this album sound like it should have when it was originally released in 2008. Loudness, audible clipping, and distortion are all gone. The bass lines are also now much more prominent. In sum, a %1000 improvement over previous iTunes and other retail releases. Highly recommended.

Bubby11117347482 - Refreshing

Best album since black album

RKSnyder - JUST LIKE THE 80s

I love every one of these songs! Metallica has been in a hole since Load (there are a couple good songs like Unforgiven II and Fuel), but this album is amazing!!! I went to the june 6 show in Austin Texas and they played Cyanide and it was freaking awesome! Ohh its sooooo heavyyyyy!!

FourRhombus8077 - BEST ALBUM EVER (I think so at least)

This is at least top 5. All of the songs are great, and as the good people of iTunes say, Kirk Hammett is the MVP. He has some of the best solos ever in Cyanide, The Judas Kiss, and That Was Just Your Life. The Judas Kiss is the best song here, followed closely by Cyanide and my apocalypse the overall rating of each of the songs is: That was Just your life:5/5 Broken beat and scarred:5/5 End of the line:4.5/5 The day that never comes: 5/5 All nightmare long:4.5/5 Cyanide: 5/5 The Unforgiven 3: 4/5 ( not sure why we needed this over any of the songs in the beyond magnetic ep, but still ok) Suicide and redemption : 4.5/5 My Apocalypse:5/5 Overall rating of Metallica: Death Magnetic: 5/5 After you buy this complete it by getting the beyond magnetic ep, it really completes this album. Keep it up Metallica

RandomKnockOut - Pretty Good Leap

This is a very good step forward from the off album of St.. Anger. Very loud very Metallica love it

BenFromJFR180 - Great Album. Period.

Can't believe some people are saying it's "too loud". Go buy a One-Direction album if this is too loud for you. I love this album. Because I'm a die-hard fan? Perhaps.

MasterMicahWH - Get it!

I can sit around for hours listening and playing these same song over and over again. The album by the way? 1:15 minutes long.

marco villegas - Back to the roots!

My favorite albums are obviously, kill me all and master of puppets. But because of when they were recorded, they lack compression. And Here it is. Good old crunch with a punch. Thank you Rick Rubin for asking the band this question "if you didn't have the hits, and you were going to play at a battle of the band, what would you sound like" This is Metallica..

MajesticSam - NOT COOL

I bought "All Nightmare Long" and it does not let me play the song, it says my computer is not authorized but when i plug in my password it says it is authorized yet still does not let me play the song, thanks a lot ...

BushWookie91 - Resurrected and redeemed

They have come far and have really pushed themselves for this album. It's a major improvement from St.Anger and you get to see the true Metallica.

HolyKraut - Awesome

I quite frankly don't understand why people hate on Unforgiven III. It is easily one of my favorite songs on the album, along with All Nightmare Long. It has one of Kirk's best solos in the album (5:34). People simply listen to the piano in the beginning and immediately skip the song. Give it a chance. Also, as far as the rest of the album, it's clear that they are trying to go to their roots, the whole album is faster, more aggressive and louder than anything in St. Anger or even the Black Album. By far one of their better albums ever.

Babsiphonenewb - Loudness War Biggest Casualty

Such a shame. Very potentially great music but they ruined the recordings and mastering. Unlistenable. I'm now cautious about any Metallica album after "And Justice for All". They should remaster them from original source with explicit mention of correcting the compression and eliminating the clipping. Glad I didn't buy this.

E-Man21 - Death Magnetic

This album proves by itself that the Mighty Metallica is NOT going anywhere. I'd like to see any of today's "metal" bands top this album......they won't. Today's music don't live up to what the band's of yesterday did and believed. Which is their own music and style and their greatest feat... their fans.

Skadistewart - iTunes Remaster

As much as i hate re-buying an album this was a worthwhile endeavor. You can finally hear some of the details on bass and other intricacies you miss out on with the standard retail version of the past due to how brick walled and loud it was. It's still compressed but it's not 12x louder than Kill em All so playing in shuffle is no longer a game of roulette for my ears.

Rocky Hensley - Their best yet

This is my favorite Metallica album

ale 1001001 - UNLISTENABLE Due to Digital Clipping

Serious sonic failure. There is so much digital clipping going on, it literally gives me a headache to listen to it for very long. Too bad because the songs themselves are good. The Guitar Hero version is only marginally better—still way too much clipping. If Lars can’t hear it, he needs to get his hearing checked.

FossilSol - Hella Thanks!!!

James, Lars, Kirk, Rob, and yes Jason. If i may be so bold Ciff:) Sorry to be so heavy. When my son died, you released "The God That Failed". It was the One truth that No one would speak.(Thank You for the Honesty). I find myself in that Dark place once more. My father is dying of stage 4 cancer. Its ripping what family i have left apart. I want all those who have been Metallica!! to know you've been the freind at my side, that speaks the words that give Strength!! Thank You! Stay Brothers. Birth-School-Matallica-Death.

Asfgklggvvh - Good album but…

It's been 7 years don't we deserve another album

Kilzofpain - Good

Metalica songs are great

Thereisonlyonetruth - Metallica reborn. Legendary album.

Absolutely fantastic. Made up for Garage Inc., which was an absolute flop in my opinion, absolutely terrible. While Metallica did not go back to the good old sounds of Black Album or ..And Justice for all, they have put together for the most part, that is different in many ways from any of their old stuff. The new Metallica is the same as the old, with fantastic ballads like The Unforgiven III, and Cyanide, this is one Album every Metallics fan should own! 5 stars, absolutely perfect!
