DavCoo - New Boston album

Classic Boston songs/albums (meaning everything up to and through the first side of Walk On) would make me listen to the radio. Problem is - these songs on this new album would make me turn the radio off. Was hoping to hear more along those earlier stylings that the majority of Boston's fan base adores - maybe even unreleased recordings that Tom and Brad did (ie. Television Politician, Shattered Images, She's a Looker/ Talking to the Wall)...

Dan Bart - Never The Same

Tom is one of the greatest...but this band will NEVER be the same without Brad Delp. He was the sound of Boston.

SuicuneManiac - WHOOHOO!

Theres too many nay-sayers these days waiting for the next band to come along and woo them with their mostly-unoriginal music. Most artists today can't even hold a CANDLE to those of yesteryear. And besides, why would you want a band you love to conform to what the media wants? Good examples are the newest albums by Van Halen and Duran Duran, i felt like i was listening to the old songs again! Just they were all new. I feel the same about this Boston album. I even have a place for it in my CD rack, since i bought the CD. I don't know why people are complaining, maybe they're just listening to the music and not LISTENING to the music. This album is great! Yes, it has some older re-records of older songs, but so did the Scorpions "Comeblack" album. If you are a true rock music lover, and Boston fan, give the whole album a try. Trust me, it's better than what most others think.

Plato Bronzebeard - 1st Boston Album I ever disliked

Dear Tom, please finally put the casio drum machine away and hire a real drummer. And can we please have some big choruses again? Thanks Sincerely, Everyone

bigdingding - I Wan My Money Back !!

Those drums ughh... Lets be honest, Tom Scholz should have retired after Brad died. The production is so dull and uninspired sounding it hurts to listen to this mess. Avoid this and listen to the first three records instead.

B.A.Thompson - Aweful

Every album up to and including Walk On has been amazing. This album, however, is terrible. Vocals are thin and over processed. Tommy DeCarlo sounds great on the little bit of live material I've seen and heard, but on this album, they try to make him sound like Brad Delp. Supposedly, there are some tracks with Delp singing so this makes me believe they took material that didn't make the old albums and force fed them to us on the album. This is a sorry excuse of an album. I'm usually the type to be accepting of changes in how a band puts out music. Usually bands do this to stay relevant. This is not the case here. They use drum machines that sound terrible. The only good thing is we do get a few small bits of Schultz's classic sound. This is lost in the confusion that is this album. I advise you avoid this one. It's not even bargin bin material.

GOATSheadsoup76 - Wow how sad.

I'm sorry but that is not Boston. That's not even a good cover band I'm old but I still can here.

lohii64 - wow another miss

The Boston guitar sound has never been the same since Barry Goudreau left the band. This cotton candy sound shows that Goudreau had the harder edge and Tom had the technical know how. Without Brad, Barry and Tom together it will never be in the same ball park. Check out any RTZ with Brad and Barry for a closer Boston sound.

Matthew 11:28 - The Tom Scholz Project, NOT Boston.

I love Boston !! My favorite albums are of course the first two. Don't Look Back is my favorite Boston song... And nobody could ever replace Brad Delp... That being said, I wasn't expecting to really like this release and at first I really didn't. But after several times, I started to like it. But the reality is, It could have been AWESOME !! if Tom had used a real drummer/percussionist on a real kit. There are plenty of great drummers out there who would have been more than happy to assist. Electronic drums are a tool (to be used in the writing process NOT in the finished product). That is just my opinion of course.. also I agree with a lot of the reviews regarding the vocals/sound.. it doesn't sound like a perfectionist was at the helm. I don't hate this release but it could have been much better.

Boston_NOT - Not Good

can I get my money back? I can't believe how bad this mix is for somebody who used to be good. Mastered for iTunes, how about Mastered for transistor radio!

Acdc0612 - Scholz's Way of Saying Goodbye

This album is not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. I'll admit the drums are pretty cheesy sounding but overall its a great album. I think that Scholz only released this album as his last work and that he is going to stop trying to resurect Boston to its former glory. Boston is and always will be one of the greatest rock bands in history.

Bballcap - New music!

Was thrilled to get new music from the band! Hope it keeps coming.

Ronald Quinlan - Tired of peoples BS...

O.K. People, There is NEVER going to be another Boston - Boston Album, so get over it! That album and its songs were written in 1969 - 1975 and you're just not going to get that again! Why don't you just ask t dig up John Lennon and beg his corpse for another "Sgt. Pepper"? I like this album! It's not as bad as all of yu haters want to put across! Beautiful vocals and soaring guitars and keyboards make this album! I miss Brad Delp to but I'm nt going to bash this album because all of you still want to see them do "More Than A Feeling" again! Listen to it, take it in, Get some musical knowledge, and, most of all...Learn To Spell!!

1 Old school fan76 - Life,love,hope?

Great instrumentally but seems a little heavy handed with the weak vocals and lyrics.Sorry I can't see adding it to my collection.

buzzwo - Unlistenable Mix

Tom - please hire an engineer next time. Despite what may be said, that has bad Pro Tools production written all over it. You crowded the mixbus dude, can't do that in PT.

Icebox in the Jungle - Yuck...

Expected so much... received so little...

mauiMan - Horrible

This nothing but commercial metal that even in 1986 would have sounded cheesy. Nothing new here that hasn't been heard before. It took 10 years to make this? No excuse. The guitars at least sound terrific but all else falls flat. Just another classic act performing in a vacuum and still living in a time warp.

Astros05 - Typical Wait

We all share a "Boston Band Bond" but this CD falls terribly short of the high performance we are (were) accustomed to. We waited 11 years for this?? Very disappointing.

Preslea - Disappointed.

Sounds out of a can, especially the drums. And why re-release tracks, and cut an inferior (IMO) version of "You Gave Up on Love"? All very curious.

Timtara2010 - Decent

There are some decent songs on here, don't believe all of the negativity.

2 layers of bacon - You're better than this Tom!

I'm blown away that someone who is arguably the most perfectionist rock musician/producer would have the gall to opt for a drum machine. Shame on you Tom! Do you have any idea how many drummers would love to have played on this album? Some nice vocals on the album and some tasty guitar bits as well, but that's about it. I'm sad to say that this lifelong Boston fan is getting off the Scholz spaceship at the next stop.

Sin37890 - Boston!!!!!!!

Heaven on earth, this generations,"More than a feeling" thank you guys for keeping this music alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "If you were in love" and "heaven on earth" it really doesn't get any better! True boston, your right on!!!! Best album(cd) cover also!!

ScottieDog in FL - A nice and gentle Boston album

First; realize that Boston has NOT been the same band since the first iconic album. And yes, it's unfortunate that so many great members have left along the way either by choice or otherwise. Okay, that being said; this is a pretty decent album for 2013; playing is tight, Tom still can pull all the stops on his guitar wizardry, lyrics for the most part are upbeat. Several songs such as "Heaven On Earth" and "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love" are catchy and stay with you. Engineering wise, I agree that much of the drums and percussion are buried in the mix. Inasfar as legacy bands go, "Life, Love & Hope" is as solid an effort as "Fanatic" was earlier in the year by Heart.

Jakarate11 - Give it a Chance

At first, I had mixed fellings about this album, but the more I listened to some of the songs, the more I liked it! I think people just try to judge it by listening to it once. No, it's not classic Boston, but it's still good, just in it's own way. Some of my favorite songs are "Someday", "Heaven on Earth", "You Gave up On Love 2.0", and "Sail Away". I will admit there are some songs I just simply dont like even after multiple listenings, but over half the album is great and it much better compared to most new music. Tom Scholz still has it going! Long live Boston!

rablett - Wish I hadn’t preordered

I guess you can just never go back and this proves it. There are moments in some of the songs that are great, but sadly the majority just doesn’t even qualify as Boston. As was said earlier, Tom should stick with playing and not sing and the drums - a drum machine? Really? Really? Come on. Sounds like a basement album from an amateur Boston wanna be band. Wish I had saved my $.

bmerton - It missed the mark

It's a muddled mess. There are a few songs on this one that I wouldn't mind cycling in my background music at work, but nothing stands out. It lacks the clear, driving sound of their early releases and just seems to amble from song to song. I'm a big fan and was really excited to see there was a new album. Bought it without even previewing the tracks. What a mistake.

middlec - This isn’t Boston..

Not sure where Scholz is going with this stuff, but it’s sure not what he’s capable of. Is he catering to the record company with this release? Sounds like a bad garage band from the 80’s! Nothing catchy or melodic about these new (old?) tracks whatsoever!

JasonElite44 - As always, INCREDIBLE

I am 17 and a HUGE Boston, and music fan in general. I own all the Boston albums on CD (better sound Idc what anyone says) which are all incredible. This new album, "Life, Love and Hope" still carries the original, one of a kind emotional sound and feel that only Boston has. Although this is still only Tom Scholz, IT'S TOM SCHOLZ. He is the band. I do however miss Brad Delp, but it was good to hear a couple of songs sung by him in this Album. R.I.P. Brad. The only problem I have with this album is the fact that it is missing the soaring guitar solo's that I as a hard core guitar player miss so much from Tom. So to all you haters or "long time Boston fans" who don't like this album your idiots. Don't get me wrong, this album is different from the rest, but it still carries the Boston sound. And to all the haters...... SHUT UP AND ROCK!!!- Tony Gambiano- Blessed By A Broken Heart. Not me, that was a quote by him. Rock on!

Timo 1971 - Different yet still a great band

It's not the same Boston ( several vocalists used instead of just one) but the guitars and harmony vocals are still great. Well done Tom!!!

Boston_forever - Incredible!!!

Tom Sholz has done it once again with a newer sound under the difficult circumstances due to the lost of Brad Delp. This album shows the growth of an evolving sound that encompases a bit of old Boston with a newer formulated style. The songs are catchy and shows the harmony that is Boston.

Rob.s.17 - The "Boston Sound"

I really wish the people talking about how crap this album is would open their eyes a little bit more. There is no possible way to expect to see the BOSTON name and think it will sound like it did in their early years. They bring back some of the classic Boston sounds in some of their songs especially with some of the guitars in "Heaven on Earth", "Life, Love, and Hope", and "Someday." There is still that "Boston Sound" present not only in that but also in the bass! As a bass player, I listen very closely to all of the bass parts in different songs and the bass in this album is phenomenal especially in "Someday." It sounds similar to songs like "It's Easy" from "Don't Look Back" and "Cool the Engines" from "Third Stage." I like to hear the "Boston Sound" in the bass again seeing as it wasn't as present in "Corporate America." Now some of these songs may not have the greatest mixing job but they are still good! They still have that "Boston Sound" I covered earlier but they also have great harmonies. These harmonies, of course, are different from their early day material but they are still powerful harmonies! Now, listen to some of the lyrics in these songs. "Someday" is all about waiting for the day that people will stop putting other people down and, in general, being kinder and avoiding putting others down! That's one great song with a great message and that's only ONE. "Heaven on Earth" is a great song about wanting the heaven on earth feeling when he's with the one he loves. She is now gone and he wishes that he could do something about it. "For what it's worth, I never wanted to see you walk away." He never wanted that outcome. "I would come running from anywhere, please say you won't give up." These are profound and meaningful lyrics! It is harder for me to judge this album in comparison to the others simply because of my age. I am 17 years old and have been listening to Boston actively for years, but I didn't live to see the original, groundbreaking line-up that released the self-titled debut. However, I feel that people should give this album another try. Listen to some of the themes and messages being presented especially in “Someday” (my personal favorite). “Sail Away” is similar to “Corporate America” in regard of presenting themes relating to power and government and “Life, Love and Hope” presents a very cheerful theme about, well, life, love, and hope! I really enjoy that song and how upbeat it is. Also, I didn't like Corporate America too much when I first listened to the album. I didn't like the new vocal sound and eerie, darker sound from some songs. I grew to love it and I encourage people to give this album another shot. I understand reasons for not liking it, it is a very different album in comparison to earlier ones, but it is still a wonderful piece of art that Boston and Scholz have released.

Mass Consciousness - Disappointing and...

...I won't be buying this album. Track one I may purchase. Tracks 4,6, and 10 are slight maybes. For the length of time between albums I expected more, Much more. There is no structure, flow or continuity in this album. With groups like Foreigner, Styx and Bad Company, to name a few, they only got better lyrically and melodically. "Corporate America" was better than this offering. I don't expect this or any other album to sound like the first one, but this effort has taken nothing from that frist undertaking. There is no polish or crispness to the songs on this album. Maybe let others in on the creative process and perhaps Boston can do better next time.

Mad Axeman - Poor and disappointing effort (if it could be called an effort)

What is happening to Tom and his band of merry men? First, you need to use a real drummer like Sib Hashian, Curly Smith or Jim Masdea. Second, use a bass player besides you like Tracy Ferrie or Kimberley Dahme. Third, you have a great guitar player in Gary Pihl...USE HIM!!! Fourth, Tommy De Carlo and David Victor are excellent singers. Don't soil your recordings using Brad Delp's voice. You are destroying a legacy using that shortcut (his recorded voice I mean). When Boston goes out on tour, you always show up with top grade musicians. I think it's time Boston used a real band in the recording of an album. Besides the first cut, this album is very forgettable.

Datiles - The first two where NOT Scholz alone!

This production shows once again that the first two albums had to be done with the help of the rest of the band. Tom has tried for years to repeat those albums but every album is worst than the previous. The sound is horrible and way to processed. He has lost his way. Too many lawsuits against everyone. RTZ is way better and shows that Tom didn't do the first albums by himself. In the meantime he will continue to sue Goudreau and everyone else. He would probably sue Brad if he was alive!

Robert "Bruce" Carleton - Great Album!

I've been able to listen to it over and over. I love the guitars.

roughroad - Disappointment

Over processed pop. Again.

PVanC - Still great

People complained that 'Corporate America' wasn't enough like old Boston. On this one, they complain that it's too soft. Hey, guess what, people and bands evolve. Listen to it more than once, and you'll fall in love with several of the tracks. I used to hate Rush because I couldn't stand Getty Lee's voice. Now I love it for it's uniqueness. Nothing can ever compare to the first time you heard the first Boston LP. But, if you give this album a chance, it will touch your soul in a different way that is just as rewarding.

Popitin - Tribute Band

Another tribute band. No more powerful instrumentals like Foreplay/Longtime, The Journey, Ignition or Walk On. "Someone" is a great song.

Nealra - Boston

Terrible this sounds like elevator music I grew up with the first and second album the rawness and edge are gone electronic drums? Really? I suppose they don't have to pay anyone that way

Chas621 - glad I didn't buy

Tom shows his same stuff different day. When he broke up the original band, he broke up what could have been. Nothing on this is inspiring, it's just Tom trying to recapeture Barry Goureau. Check out Rockin' Away with Brad Delp & Barry making the last true Boston Song. Brad You'll live forever in our Hearts. An Barry tom will never be like you.

Pitifulhumans - Another unfortunate Boston failure.

For a band with such promise so many years ago. A band with such enormous talent. Boston continues to put out the most boring and prepackaged drivel ever. This album stinks.

TxnTom - Who wants the same stuff over and over?

OK, there's three songs being re-used …Corporate America didn't sell well and the three re-do's were probably three of the stronger cuts. However, I didn't want a new release to sound like everything else they've done before. We're having to adjust to the loss of Brad Delp. Was the best Boston's done? No…it's not. But is it a bad album? NO. There's a lot to like. Tom Scholz has a identifiable knack of melodic playing that's hard to ignore. There's some very "Boston" sounds that I've always hoped they'd improve: drums and piano. But in spite of all the negative comments already posted, this is worth having in your Boston collection.

iselldummysmacks - I Like It.

I'll give this album my blessing. We all love Brad Delp, and it hurts that he's no longer here, but these guys are trying hard. Sail Away captures that spirit of nostalgia I've been missing for a long time in their music. The singer doesn't try to compete with Brad, but at the same time doesn't leave him behind. Feels good buying decent music again.

UriahHeep - R.I.P. Brad

Well, overall the songs aren't as awful as some of the reviewers have stated, but not up to the first 2 albums in quality. I've been a fan since the first and have struggled to stay a fan with their last couple attempts. A few of the songs were reasonably listenable and a few were just recycled melodies and riffs from early Boston. The biggest problem I think is that the mix is absolutely horrible. The vocals are muddy and the levels inconsistent. I tried listening to samples from a couple other sources besides the iTunes store in case it was just their masters but it's the same at the others too. Maybe since the equipment that Tom is using is analog he just over-produced it and lost a lot of the quality in the processing, I don't know, but the crispness and balance between the guitars, bass, vocals and drums (even if he was using a drum machine) just aren't there. I'm really disappointed and will not be purchasing this CD unless I happen to find it in a clearance rack for $1.99 or thereabouts. It's so sad that what was once such a classic and original rock sound has just failed to keep up to the standards that we once knew.

Mark32570 - Better than C.A., but thats about it.

Well after 35 years of hoping we might finally get a true follow up to the big 2 (Boston, Don't Look Back), I think it's clear now that it will never happen. And even more unfortunate that only 8 of the 11 songs here are new, as 3 are re recordings of songs from the abysmal Cooperate America. That being said, those 8 new songs are an improvement over the last album for sure. Get only if you are an avid Boston fan.

samrod1465 - Great music

Lets face it, no one will ever be able to replace Brad Delp! I feel that Tom refuses to sacrifice what HE believes to be the true "Boston" sound. I truly enjoy anything these guys put out. I also feel "didn't mean to fall in love" which was released on their last album but got no play time, is a masterpiece! To each their own. Keep em coming Tom!

Ruth Babe - Lunch Menu

Crap Sandwhich

u56esxdrtfg0h-[ol;,./ - 10 years for this?

What a waste of $10. Nothing stands out and all the songs sound the same.

Bill Raab - Created in a Vacuum

Tom created this album a vacuum with bits of folks he sucked up along the way yet were long ago cast aside by him… or had lawsuits filed against them. Created in a vacuum means that it is going to ____ (fill in the blank)

GoldTop68 - The Boston Guitarship has crash landed!

This insipid mess is a poor excuse for an album, let alone a Boston album. Tom should be ashamed of himself at this point. Ten years and this is all that Scholz has to show for his painstaking efforts. Three of the songs have previously been released on earlier albums. Brad's vocals have once again been squandered in the mix. By the way Tom, you still can't sing. The drum machine on my DigiTech RP 90 sounds better than the drums on this album. It's time to permanently park the Boston guitarship in the hangar; take away Tom's guitar pick: and lock the barn door. These other reviews weren't written by true Boston fans, but by Tom's immediate family.
