Sonic Highways by Foo Fighters Album Info

Sonic Highways is the eighth studio album by Foo Fighters. It was produced by Butch Vig and was released on November 10, 2014, on RCA Records. In writing the album's eight songs, singer and guitarist Dave Grohl traveled to eight cities across the United States to conduct interviews with musicians, recording engineers, record producers, and other individuals discussing each city's musical history, which he used as inspiration for the songs' lyrics. The band and Vig then traveled to a different recording location in each city to record the songs. Each track features contributions from one or more musicians with ties to that city's musical history. The process was filmed for a companion television series, Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways, which was broadcast on HBO in the months surrounding the album's release.

dbensonU2 - Pretty Good but Stop Talking Sh*t About Other Bands

Not a band album and appreciated what they have done but not sure why some of the band members have said negative things about other bands. Taylor said U2’s new album sounded like a Fart after just one listen and Dave said he thinks veterans bands that tour without putting out new music are lazy. Some of these bands have helped pave the way for the FF’s so really not sure why they are talking Sh*t.

Geeknerdork - awesome artistic idea.

Love every song on this album. The HBO series what phenomenal as well. Can't wait to see Foo Fighters at Fenway in July!

Pianodan76 - Phenomenal

Let me start be saying I am a musician and have been playing for 30 years and teach out of my home. Also I was like "so what....a Nirvana spinoff. Big deal.", when I first heard Foo. What I've heard so far of this record is absolutely tremendous and I felt I had to download it. "Subterranean" alone is worth it's weight in gold. I have listened to and played music in several genres and have extensive music collection but I have never heard anything quite like this track. Other tracks bear a strong 70s and Zeppelin flavor but reinventing it rather than blatantly ripping it off. Although over the years they have produced a number of respectable tunes my respect for Foo just got a lot bigger. No wonder Jimmy Page wants to hang out with these guys, they've truly grown as musicians and songwriters. No one will ever mistake them as a flash in the pan again. They've gone so far beyond standard grunge and are beginning to cement their place as a staple of our generation.

cubfanet - Lovin' listening over and over

This is an album that flows beautifully from song to song..from city to city...like the river Dave sings about at the end...the river that ties us together through our love of music. Watching the Sonic Highways series on HBO then getting the album made me feel like I was there and a part of putting it together. Dave Grohl should keep doing this ...great idea...great music.

andydrums89 - Definitely not my favorite Foo's album.

There are some really strong, amazing songs on this album, but it didn't get to me as much as "Wasting Light" did.

Squkin - Sonic Highways

This album is amazing. I don't know if everyone that listened to this album watched the Foo's journey to making this posable. If you haven't seen it yet I completely recommend you do.They shows you what city each song came from, and the story's behind the people interviewed. Dave would take notes from everyone he interviewed, then take bits and pieces of words and then turn them into songs.

servoss21 - Boring

I love the ff, but seriously only 8 songs and not a single one of them is intriguing!! 😞👎

The Foo dNetwork - You told me to stop cigarettes but didn't tell to stop SMOKIN'

Great concept, fantastic music, even better historical homage to the city scene.

KCfastpitch - Excellent

Long time Foos fan can't stop listening.

Kaleeenka - Never written a review

The concept is awesome and I can't wait for the next album/season because it can only get better. Wow!!!!

Ditmark - I have never bought an album from FF

I am pretty happy I bought this one on preorder time because maybe I'll get the chance to get some other songs more and yet enjoy this pieces of music so different from each other and still great. Update: Still haven't gotten what they offered to us during preorder.

Bethie RN/NP - You must get this album & watch series!!!

What a tribute to music and the long winding history of it. So much respect given to many different artists! To see the lyrics emerge from their experiences and recount of the history of each city - AMAZING!! If you don't get this album and it's concept..... Then you just don't get music period. To see how the Foo Fighters have evolved as musicians and people as we've all grown older is just sheer perfection. Dave Grohl is a humble poet whose lyrics cause shivers in those open to the words & music! DAVE GROHL IS A ROCK GOD!!!

Vanskippy - Foo-tastic!!!!

This is truly a great, artistic, meaningful album! Dave and the rest of the band is amazingly talented. It's nice to hear an album created by true musicians with talent and not computers and voice machines! Critics with negative comments are just not listening!!!

Libsnibsdibsclibsshlibs - Musician to Musician

Most people here can't play what they listen to, if you really want to here the good part of the music you have to be able to hear it. I have, and this album is incredible, couldn't have done it better myself

Black*Flag - Loving this album

The more I listen to it the better it gets. I wish there were more songs though (yes, i understand the 8 songs are a theme since the number 8 as a symbol means infinity) still doesnt take away from the fact that I want more new Foo.

Wik73 - Complete Garbage

I cannot understand the hype around this album. This bland and quite awful. It does NOT in anyway live up to past albums. It's all hype and no substance.

Homie372 - Good album

Good album. The HBO series is what really makes this! Personally think the series is better than the actual record. 👍

War Rabbits - eh, honestly it’s OK.

Every song is solid and stands on its own. Something from Nothing is the best song and after that it seems that instead of further expanding or exploring where he left off Dave lingers and tries to achieve the same thing song after song. And that’s where the problem lies. People were expecting an album (especially an 8 song one) where every track is unique from the rest. But the opposite is true. Dave is a great artist but I feel he was distracted with all his projects and fell short on his songwriting for this one. Hope their next album is more focused.

Frankie Bee 123 - Awesome!

I have waiting for years to hear music that actually means something. Finally! You really have to watch the HBO series to understand what I mean. Every song is great. I love the way the HBO series gave you a history lesson with meaning and exploration of some great underground music. I was introduced to other great bands that I would have never known and now am enjoying their music. Dave is a musical genius. All you haters just go listen to something else. Thanks Dave and the band of Foos!

Prssantana - Musicianship

Ok, I've read most of all of the 2,222 reviews on here and let me just start by saying, if you have not played any kind of instrument or any kind of music, you should not be bashing the Foo Fighters for anything! Most of you can't hold a beat to save your life, but yet decided to write a review about a band that has come up with one of the best concepts of writing and recording an album. Yes, I have been in music for 28 years and can honestly say that watching the whole series and listening to the songs that were recorded for that series has brought a new appreciation for Foo Fighters. The way they have brought the different musicians in on different songs to fill in different rhythms, is something that every musician dreams of! Collaborating with different genres is a musician thing and if you have never played, you will never know what it feels like! I know every album that the Foo Fighters or any other band is not going to please everybody, but that is the beauty of today's society. You don't have to listen to it, plain and simple!! If you don't like it, delete it. And when you do, just remember that the Foo Fighters are still going to play in front of millions of people every year and are still going to be playing sold out shows and guess what, you won't be there because you decided to delete it. Keep rockin' Foo Fighters and hope to see you soon!

Dr.DiggityDog - Dave grohl isn't washed up

I'm tired of the negativity. "Where's the dave grohl from nirvana?" Dave wasn't even the original nirvana drummer so quit basing things on the past. Everyone who wants the sound from the first foo fighters albums... It was just Dave. By himself playing everything!! These days there are several members putting thoughts into the songs of the foo fighters. One more thing... Once you've shared the stage with Jimmy Page, you've pretty much earned the right to make whatever music you want.

alexbean11 - Lame

To cheesy and phony, what happend to the honesty?

Cubs and Ivy - 👎

If the Foo's released this album, and didn't do a TV special, it would be an even bigger disappointment.

NeoElement - All Hail Rock-n-Roll!!

Chuck Berry was the father of rock-n-roll. Eddie Vedder became its tortured conscience. Eric Clapton became its confident hand. David Grohl and the Foo Fighters have become it's hard thumping heart and soul. Hanging onto rock's history and paying homage to the proudly tattered threads that weave its sonic tapestry.. Dave, Taylor, Pat, Chris and Nate did this right. No other band was brave enough to expose themselves in such a way, to hang it out there and feel it, to be humble and reverent of the most subtle but significant details, to take a private tour of rock's haunted houses and monuments of achievement.. and allow us to witness it all. Thanks, guys.. this is a beautiful thing. Butch, you're the man! Nicely done.

Dalton9090909 - Love it!

Look I am a huge foo fighters fan and love a lot of their music and this album was absolutely great and each song definitely captured the setting in which it was recorded I recommend watching the series too! Although I am disappointed with there only being 8 songs it was almost a year since there last album and I was hoping for about 12.

Mickey Mike - Pop music

Not heavy enough for Foo Fighters.

brokemyfall - Long Live the FOO

I love this Album. They need to release the videos that are on their website. In the Clear 5 stars and also Outside 5 Stars. Thanks boys for putting out yet another glorious Rock Album.

si ny si - Amazing!!

Great album; great band

dmairq - Great Album especially if you can separate the HBO Documentary From the album.

I’ve seen a lot of marginal reviews of this album which just don’t seem fair. This is an awesome sounding FF rock album. It seem like the HBO series set some sort of odd expectation that I’m not sure the band was going for. Sonic Highways on HBO was a documentary of FF going out to find eclectic and possibly last of a kind studios in key music meccas. I don’t believe the songs were suppose to somehow capture the genre of the area being visited. The documentary was trying to explain the history of the music scene of the area as well as the studio’s history. It’s pretty clear the songs were not trying to capture the nuances of the regions soundscape. If you can separate TV from music it’s easy to understand what an ambitious undertaking this was. Appreciate each for what they did individually. This is a rock album with lyrics that quietly hint to the area they recorded a particular song in. The songs are all great and the production stands out as Vig’s work always does. I have a ton of respect for Grohl trying to go out and pay homage to America’s music epicenters while creating a new album that subtly winks at the region hosting them. Separate the HBO series from the album and enjoy the music. This is a great album.

typeanynicknamehere - wow. complete crapola

Pass. Epic fail. Linkin Parks new one is way better. only 8 songs?????

Jason1225 - Great music, great doc.

This shows a pretty vast improvement in the Foo’s. Especially in terms of lyrics. Dave really stretched and grew here. The whole idea of documenting and incoorporating american history and music is great! I do wish there could have been an episode for Detroit and Athens, GA. This album starts off a little uneven, and is really solid in the middle, and almost rounds out well, though I’m not a big fan of “I am a River”. Favorite tunes: “Subterranean” “Feast and the Famine", “What did I do/As god as my witness” and “Congregation”.

Lowell Rules - A Masterpiece

An absolutely fantastic album from start to finish. Great rock songs with soul and feeling and emotion. So well done. Love, LOVE this album.

Rafacze - Sensational!

The best album of the year (2014)!

Joshccc - Wow, well done!!

I am a huge Foo Fighters fan and have loved every album they have written. This is such a well written and produced album. Really like the idea and concept behind the recording. I have listened to this album through and through several times. All great songs!

Shymon - Can’t stop listening

Best album I’ve bought in the last several years. Stays true to the Foo Fighter’s roots and shows their songwriting is just getting better and better.

Lilmama22 - Classic

Nothing but classic music from this album.

dannyjcraig - Been on Repeat for 2 Weeks

What an incredible album. I see no need for any other songs on my iPhone because I hit repeat all on this album and haven't looked back. Truly amazing.

d flak - Grohl saves rock & roll!!

Love this journey Dave and the FF are on. I grew up on grunge and was more of a Pearl Jam fan than Nirvana but still liked their stuff. Who would have known then that the drummer would become such visionary musician all these years later with no end in sight. Keep it up!

Chandlerjs - Amazing.

This is such a solid album, and you can totally hear the different cultures throughout the songs in the album. Such a good record.

Zonkcat - Wonderful!

I haven't purchased the album yet, but I've been watching the documentary of it on HBO. I must say I am in love with the concept, it's brilliant and every song I've heard so far is awesome and I can't wait to get this album

Tbizzone - Best album since the Colour and the Shape

Please purchase this album. You won't be sorry. The best Foo Fighters song will always be Everlong, however there are a couple on this album that propel it the the second best FF album. I really enjoyed "Congregation" and "In the Clear". The best song on this album by leaps and bounds is "I am a River". Could listen to it over and over. My only message to the Foo Fighters is this. Keep doing what you FOO!

HomerBrieske - Really enjoyed the HBO series.

Caught the HBO series "Sonic Highways" and it really gave a great backdrop to each and every song, so I bought the album. There has to be more material that Dave and the guys wrote during this trip across America than just eight songs. Looking forward to purchase the Sonic Highways series on iTunes.

CincinnatiRocker - Some great, some okay

3 must have songs; Something from Nothing (the best), Congregation and Feast and Famine. Could take or leave the rest. Anybody who gives this CD less than 3 stars is nuts tho! I personally love the songs that jam; but apparently so do most other Foo fans since those songs always have the highest ratings. I have been rock & rolling for almost 50 years (started when I was 8 when my mom took me to see the Beatles) and Foo Fighters is the only major rock band I haven't seen (at least, that I wanted to see). Can't wait for the 2015 tour; had to pay $450 for two tickets but it will be worth it!

JoanieMichelle - Amazing rock album!

I love the Foo Fighters and this album does not disappoint! I would definitely watch the HBO series of Sonic Highways. It is so good and really helps you understand where this band was coming from in the creative process! The Foos are one of the few bands around who are worth anything these days! Buy the album, you won't regret it!

ryanyomomma - A very ambitious effort

I listened to this album before watching the HBO series. I thought it was pretty good.. then I watched the series. I don't care how any of you do it (cable, HBO-GO... other means), watch this series. Do it. It puts this album and the bands intentions of why they made this album into perspective. After watching this documentary, this album shot up to the (near) top of favorite Foo Fighter albums. I don't know why these critics (on here and beyond) got it so wrong. This is a great album. Go watch the series and get this album!

Hawaiian Lion55 - WEAK SAUCE!!!

I love the Foo Fighters but this album has NO BALLS and NO BITE whatsoever!

Jangofire - uninspired

for all the talk in the HBO series about "being inspired" by the bands travels through america for the making of this album and series. The band has put out it's worst album, ironically void of inspiration or any american musical influences. Nashville, Chicago Blues, Philly Funk, NY Punk? all I hear is corporate rock. For a 3 guitar band == there's really nothing exciting going on with guitar in these tracks, just a steady guitar army drone. This is not the band Television. Butch Vig has phoned this in as well. He lloks pretty bored in the film. Perhaps the biggest disappointment are the lyrics. Grohl latches on to this gimmic of dropping in lines pulled from the series just in case you forget which song is from which town -- it very much reminds me of doing book reports in high school by lifting cliff notes for book i never read. I may have gotten a B+ but not only did i not learn anything-- i also missed out on reading the book.

P Mission - Rock is Not Dead

This album and Band for that matter, gives me hope that Rock 'n Roll is still alive! This is truly a journey across America that discovers the roots and fabric of our culture. Brilliant concept Dave Grohl and with so many other cities that have an influence, a sequel must be considered!

Davidwc1974 - Unbelievable !!!!

I had HIGH hopes for this cd and was not disappointed. By far , the best Foo Fighters album ever. Quite possibly my favorite album ever. Dave and the boys have done it again.

piperatom - Hooks

Some beauty to go with the angst. Outside and I am a river are just amazing pieces. The more I hear this album, the better it gets.
