The whole idea with ferguson and Selma in it is the point that racism still exists today and it's a horrible thing. I really liked the song. It had a really good message!

The people who are getting upset because Ferguson is brought up in this song need to do their research. Everything the mainstream media brought to you was painted to make the Ferguson protests seem awful. Yes, there were some people who did awful things in Ferguson, but if you think people didn't do awful things like that when MLK was leading his movement, you're wrong. The fact that a song that's on the top charts and was preformed in front of millions at the Oscar's is talking about the injustice that's STILL going on is a huge win. We can only hope that it will open blind eyes and deaf ears.

This is a great song because even though it mentions ferguson DOES NOT make it a "horrible song" it's a great song about independence and freedom of a stereotype for Africa Americans.

Common mentioning ferguson shows that we are still dealing with a civil rights movement. We are still fighting for equality in America. So I am overjoyed that he talk about Ferguson in relation to Selma to show you what we are still dealing with in today modern society. Thank you Common and John Legend.

MLK would be ashamed of what happened in Ferguson. Great intentions and great beat but that really ruins it. I can't believe these artists support what happened in Ferguson. What a shame

People are offended about how this song mentions Ferguson, that's not the point. The point of having Ferguson in the song is to make it relevant about how racism and protests are still going on today, not to group Selma and ferguson together. Selma was a peaceful protest, ferguson was not but they were both protesting for equal rights.

When I saw John Legend I was hyped for this song. Then I heard the clip and heard them talk about Ferguson?!?! Seriously?! Not Selma at all. Not even close. Seriously America we need to recognize the difference.

Love this song! It did a great job bridging past struggles to current struggles. The song does not compare the civil rights movement to Ferguson but boldly speaks of how we must not stop speaking out against injustices whether mass incarceration, pay equity, public education, or healthcare reform.

Why mention ferguson in this song....

I love this song. I'm not sure if the people in the reviews understand what is happening in ferguson translates to Selma. Many misunderstand that governmental racism and police brutality exist today. This song has such courage to recognize the problems we have today with equality. Wonderful and amazing song.

This song is amazing, for the people say that this song talks of Ferguson and the violent protesting. There was not only just a violent side but also peaceful protests just like there was during the civil rights movement. There is an ugly side to both but also a peaceful side. This song is great.

Overall a pretty interesting song, Common & Legend make an outstanding duo. That being said, the reason I give this song a 3/5 is because of the lyrics which equate the riots in ferguson with the peaceful protests of MLK & Selma. I absolutely condemn the violence in Ferguson & I do not think it should be used to make a point about fighting for rights. In fact, I think Dr. King himself would condemn the riots. However, that aside the lyrics & message of this song still speak on a very important issue and despite my disapproval of their analogy, I believe the general message of the song is a good one and one that I can support. Also, the music and the melody of this song earn a 4/5 on their own in my opinion, great chorus by Legend and Common as always delivers smart, witty and meaningful lyrics in his verses. Overall, I would definitely say this is a great song and you should give it a chance.

I really liked the chorus.. John Legend has a nice voice. BUT, I will never buy or endorse this song, thanks to the lyrics Common speaks of in relation to Ferguson. I just wanted to mention that the protests in ferguson began peaceful, and for weeks, the protestors remained as the ones under Dr. King's guidance. Only a few ignorant individuals decided to take matters into their own hands and created a horrible image of the ferguson protests. This song, I am sure is enlightening us of the power of peaceful protesting, and I would like to express my full admiration for such a masterful piece of art. God bless you all and let freedom reign

As countless other reviewers have stated, Ferguson in NO WAY is similar to Selma. To make the comparison is ridiculous. Martin Luther King preached compassion and peace, not senseless rioting and violence in order to make a statement. While this is a beautiful song, the Ferguson part simply ruined it for me. Too bad.

This is a travesty. Selma and Ferguson have NOTHING in common. To try to make them similar is to spit in the face of Dr. King. Granted, there are injustices that occur in law enforcement, but this particular instance the writers just have it wrong. The Selma freedom marches were trying to right wrongs. Ferguson was not anything like that!! Even the aftermath of Ferguson, people looted and stole from their neighbors. No wrongs corrected. Just more pain. I want to like this song but this one thing they got totally wrong and ruins the whole thing for me.

The problem with this song is the Ferguson lyric which is entirely different than the revolution that Dr King led. Also the lyric about Jesus got a crown on his head is portraying Jesus as a human.

Why does everything have to be about race leave ferguson out sing the song don't choose a side. That is not what people listen to music for!

Dr. Martin Luther King said "A riot is the language of the unheard." People saying that the mention of Ferguson ruins this powerful song are pathetic. Ferguson, along with other riots AND peaceful protests, are happening because the battle for equality, the one Dr. King was fighting, is far from over. If you don't understand that, or don't want to, I'd suggest to just listen to this great, Oscar-winning song and get over yourself.

His performance at the Oscars was absolutely amazing. It was so powerful and held so much emotion and meaning. Why can't people look past Ferguson and just focus on the meaning of the whole song?

This is a stirring and beautiful song. It is quite clear that some conservative talking head objected to the mention of Ferguson, so now their dittoheads are giving single star reviews. Conservatives love the MLK era civil rights movement because it happened a long time ago and they don't have to be afraid of it. Were King alive today the Right would demonize him mercilessly.
