Jane in Space is an electronic and industrial band based in Brooklyn, New York. Journalists have compared the band’s sound to Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode, or—as the Huffington Post wrote—like “somewhere Radiohead might have ventured if they let loose once in a while.” In 2016, Jane in Space's debut album earned glowing reviews. ABORT Magazine wrote that “every once in a while someone comes along and re-writes the rules . . . the talent shines brightly through this highly polished offering.” The Huffington Post described the album as “a masterpiece . . . an authentic and brilliantly unique sound.” The music blog Vibes After Music picked the album as one of the top 9 rock albums of 2016, ranking it alongside releases from renowned acts like Deftones and 12 Foot Ninja. The group's unique sound comes from the tension created when bassist Josh Stillman—in the words of the publication With Guitars—“sneaks funk into the band’s otherwise deliberately mechanized sound” created by multi-instrumentalist/producer Jesse Jensen. Vocalist Tom Vickers glues these elements together with strong pop melodies influenced by the Britpop from his native Oxford. The result, as described by ProgSphere, is a fusion of “synthwave and industrial music with what is fundamentally pop songwriting, and great songwriting at that.” After releasing its debut album, the band worked with renowned sound manipulator Keith Hillebrandt (Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie) on its acclaimed follow-up "gorerunner," which also received wide acclaim. Alternative Nation described as an "explosive EP" that "takes the torch lit by industrial giants Nine Inch Nails and Ministry and provides the manic genre a fresh sound for our current age," and Headstuff gave the album 5/5, writing that "Every track on Gorerunner is saturated with atmosphere, weaving the broad tapestry of dark, haunting, mysterious, and even psychedelic textures at points. Perhaps the best feature is the epic monstrosity of the synth and guitar tones ... evidence of hours of meticulous tinkering and refinement." Since then, the band has already finished another release with Hillebrandt, to come out later this year.
