Diversity’s the word when it comes to beach-going Aussie beat maker Jordan Burns. Determined not to be pigeonholed, Burns creates music for both sides of your soul. Energetically ricocheting between light and dark house he hits a sweet spot, satisfying the ears with smooth melodies before feeding our inner beast with savage, nose-scrunching bass lines. Homegrown heroes like Ajax coloured Jordan’s first introduction to the world of dance music, however it wasn’t until he hit the clubs in person that inspiration truly struck. “Before I turned 18 I was very into bands and guitar… but when I started clubbing I realised I didn’t need a band, I could create everything by myself with a computer—it blew my mind.” Highly motivated and willfully independent, once Burns discovered he could carve a space in the industry on his own he wasted no time, diving head first into the world of electronic production, and the beat hasn’t stopped rolling since. Essentially living his dream, Burns is now booked for the festivals he used to love as a punter like Listen Out, Groovin the Moo and the iconic Splendour in the Grass. He’s supported his musical inspirations like Drezo and Tchami, and thrown down heat from the booth of Australia’s best loved clubs including Chinese Laundry, Ministry of Sound and the infamous Revolver. Despite thriving whilst on tour, Burns isn’t about to let his industry life take away from his time outdoors. “I spend all my spare time at the beach,” he explains. “I've got a van, and I’ll often drive to the coast and stay there overnight—because that’s where I get really inspired. On studio days I work on music all morning, go for a swim, then go back to the studio again, rinse and repeat the whole cycle.” It sounds as though the salt and sand was definitely still in Jordan’s hair when he created ‘Buy My Love’ featuring New Haven, his latest sunny house release with a nostalgic vibe. “Yeah I was picturing summer on the beach,” he recalls, “hence the classic Ibiza house kind of sound. I was also listening to Pnau’s new album heavily while I was making it—the strong piano lead comes from that.” With the DJ hours clocking up, a freshly signed deal with TMRW Music’s ASTRX imprint, original productions out every other month and a growing pile of eclectic edits released including Peking Duk, Sneaky Sound System and Kendrick Lamar, Jordan Burns is making a lot of the right kind of noise. From sun-soaked afternoons by the pool to sweaty basement sessions beneath street level—Burns has your groove in hand.
