NPR, formerly 'National Public Radio', is a privately and publicly funded non-profit membership media organization that serves as a national syndicator to 797 public radio stations in the U.S., particularly releasing numerous podcasts. NPR is based in Washington D.C., and the organization reaches more than 27 million listeners as of 2010. NPR was created in 1970, following congressional passage of the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 that President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law. A Harris poll in 2005 found that NPR was voted the most trusted news source in the U.S. In mid-2010, the organization decided to go by just the acronym in all of its programming, although 'National Public Radio' reminds the legal name in certain ways and is sometimes used. NPR currently produces and distributes news and cultural programming that covers a diverse set of topics, including: All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Fresh air, Talk of the Nation, Day to Day, Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me, Car Talk, World Cafe, All Songs Considered, Science Friday. Some NPR stations also carry programs not distributed by NPR, but by other distributors. These shows include A Prairie Home Companion and This American Life.
